The National Guard in Artesia, New Mexico has been a part of the community since 1898. The guard was established as the Territorial Militia to provide security for the territory. In 1907, Artesia became a city and the National Guard was organized into Company A. The company served until 1931 when it was redesignated as Battalion C. In 1941, Battalion C was disbanded and its members were absorbed into Company G which would become the present day National Guard unit in Artesia. The first unit of the National Guard in Artesia was Company K which arrived from Albuquerque on October 15th, 1898. It functioned as an interim unit until company A could arrive from San Angelo on November 2nd, 1898. The detachment arrived at Fort Bliss with supplies and equipment on December 3rd and began providing security for town during the early days of cityhood. From 1911-1915, battalion C supervised construction of a new armories located at Fifth and Main Streets in downtown Artesia. These armories would be used by both Company G and later Battalion C until they were decommissioned in 1931 and replaced by more modern facilities at Second Street/Eighth Avenue et al.. In 1941, while still under command of Company G, battalion C participated inOperation Ranch Hand which took place in southern New Mexico between February-March of that year. This operation resulted in the death or capture of many German soldiers who had invaded America through Chihuahua County prior to this event. With World War II raging throughout much of North America, battalion C mobilized on September 16th 1942 and soon after arrived at Camp Bowie Texas where they remained until November 1943 when they sailed for England aboard USS Galveston (LST-542). Upon arrival back Stateside they were assigned to duty with Headquarters Squadron 8th Air Force stationed at RAF Wyton near Lincolnshire England before being discharged here on December 10th 1945 having served honorably their country during World War II!

The well had an estimated output of up to 100 barrels per day when it was first drilled but production dwindled over time due to competition from more recent wells. In 1926, however, US Senator James Fenton (D-NM) secured a $1 million grant from President Coolidge to modernize Artesia's economy with the help of local businesses and citizens who contributed money or created artesian rigs that produced high quality watercolors using artifacts collected at the site. Today, Artesia still produces high-quality artesian watercolors under the name “Albuquerque Watercolor Company” which has been doing so since 1902. Today, Artesia is home to a variety of businesses and attractions including: Museum Of American Indian Arts; Donnybrook Park; Albuquerque Folklife Museum; Andres Romero Park; Arroyo Seco State Historic Park; Tranquility Ranch Nature Preserve and more!
