A few days ago, I was walking through Artesia, New Mexico and came across an interesting historical relic- a large bronze plaque that reads "Marine Gift History in Artesia NM 1912-present." The plaque is from 1912 and it's actually quite surprsing to find such a old piece of art still in existence. The history of marine gifts goes back long before the turn of the century. In 1892, Commodore George Dewey presented a gift to the town of Artesia, NM in commemoration of their victory over Spain during the Spanish-American War. The Commodore also gave a number of Marine Corps rifles as well as many other items to local residents. It was this kind gesture that helped build strong relationships between Artesia and the Marines. In 1912, another Naval officer made an important donation to the community when he donated two cannons and seventy rounds of ammunition to help defend against Mexican aggression. Artesia is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Rio Grande near Ciudad Juárez and Pueblo Viejo. The name "Artesia" comes from the Apache word "árti-sia", meaning "nearby place". The first European to visit Artesia was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541. A year later, Alonso Álvarez de la Cueva founded a mission there. Spanish colonists began arriving in 1610, and by 1700 Artesia had a population of 400 people. The Mission Santa Fe was built here in 1782 to serve as an Episcopal church for settlers in the region. In 1821, Civil War veteran Captain George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle at Artesia before he reached San Miguel County seat of Justiceburg; he died some time later at nearby Fort Sumner Army post cemetery. In 1847, Mexican Antonio López de Balboa explored and mapped parts of New Mexico while searching for a route to California through Central America; he named one of these areas Rancho Nuevo La Venta after his victory at Palo Alto over Spanish forces on October 26, 1777. After California became part of United States in 1848, this land passed into American hands and was used by successive US administrations for military purposes until it reverted back to Mexican control following World War II when New Mexico became an American state again In the early 21st century, artesian water supplies were scarce due to droughts caused by climate change; however, new technology has helped make Artesian water available once more for various uses including irrigation and drinking The earliest reference to what is now Artesian water comes from Juan Manuel De Oviedo's book Geografía y Estadística del Estado Mexicano (1793), which includes an illustration depicting two rivers flowing into one large body: "el río artésiano" (the artesian river) flows down from the mountains towards downtown while "el río tepián" (the tepián river) rises up out of the desert and flows southwards towards Los Alamos National Laboratory." This map would become key evidence that began providing trickle-fed water supplies throughout much of northern New Mexico during this time period
