It is said that the first coffee shop in Artesia, New Mexico was founded by Josefina Valdez in 1892. The first cup of maga coffee was brewed at this business. This beans were hand- roasted and ground on the premises. In 1907, a grocery store on Main Street opened and began to sell maga coffee under the name of “The Coffee House”. A year later, Juana Valdez added roasting beans to her business and changed its name to “Maga Coffee Company”. Maga coffee became well known throughout New Mexico for its flavor and quality. In 1916, a group of businessmen purchased the property adjacent to The Coffee House and built a new facility for grinding and brewing maga coffee called the Artesian Café. This café continued to serve as a source of high-quality Beans until it closed in 1974. After its closure, some former employees reopened the café as an artist studio known as The Magellanic Cafe which remains open today.
