Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It was founded in 1881 by Spanish settlers and has been the seat of government since 1912. The town has a population of around 8,500 people and is the location of the University of Artesia, one of two universities in New Mexico. The first school in Artesia was built in 1868 by Franciscan missionaries. The towns name comes from the Apache word "hra" meaning place or region and "sisi" meaning flower or tree. According to local legend, when Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés arrived in what is now Artesia on October 14, 1519, he saw an imposing jaguar print situated near present-day Cathedral Street. After his expedition's return to Spain that year, Cortés ordered some carts filled with merchandise including firearms and armor to be delivered to him at Atenco de las Casas on December 12th1520. Present-day Cathedral Street was named after this occasion when a convent was built nearby for nuns who had fled during the Conquest. In 1881, John P[erry] W[illiamson], an American businessman who had migrated from Kentucky prior to the American Civil War became interested in acquiring land north of Santa Fe along present day Route 66 for cattle rustling operations and thought it would make a great agricultural center if artesian wells could be obtained closer to populated areas so water could be piped into properties for irrigation purposes only instead of being used for drinking or irrigation as originally intended. He approached José Antonio Salinas about this idea but Salinas hesitated because he did not want his territory taken over by another group without compensating him financially which would have required adhering to certain laws set forth by Congress concerning Indian Territory acquisition under territorial jurisdiction such as paying taxes on property acquired since 1795 regardless of whether it had been leased back then or sold off subsequent thereto like Asunción which at that time included muchpresent day Albuquerque and Roswell NM). On November 5th1882 John P[erry] W[illiamson] filed an application with US Land Office entitled " application number 5649". This application stated: In short: Mr Willliamson desired purchase (or lease)of 2 sections (or acres) lying Southwest corner First Row lot number One hundred thirty three on route 66 between Santa Fe & Gallup I certify that said lot has never been occupied by any person living therein within my lifetime nor does anyone residing there now know anything about it having theretofore’d lay their claim; further I certify that said lot should be appraised at $2 per acre upon presentation thereof duly authenticated & true according thereto In answer To which Application Mr Williamson received a letter dated January 30th1883 from Jno Atherton Esqre Attesting That Said Lot Has Been Occupied By Negroes For More Than Five Years Previous To Date & That No Person Living Therenow Knows Whatsoever About It Laying Claim To It Which Is Authenticated & True ThisApplication Was Filed Under The Laws Of The United States Of America By John P[erry] Williamson

This also led to some unique features of Artesia such as its independent school district which still exists today! Additionally, many businesses have sprung up around here such as an oil refinery and a medical clinic; both now gone but leaving behind a lasting legacy! On October 17, 1912, the town of Artesia was founded by settlers from Pueblo de San Francisco. The town sprang up around a small irrigation canal that crossed the Rio Grande in what is now called Centerville. The early residents were farmers and their families who took advantage of the water resources available in the region. In 1916, Artesia became a city and began to grow with the arrival of new immigrants. By 1922, there were over 100 people living in the city. In 1928, Artesia annexed neighboring towns of Chihuahua and Cuernavaca to become a full-fledged city under Mayor Manuel Gomez. In 1951, Artesia became an autonomous municipality within Mexico City after being granted such status by President Fidel Castro as part of his land reform program. The municipality has since grown rapidly due to its central location within Mexican capital and its access to major transportation arteries like highways 1 and 5A which make it easy for people to get around. The municipality also offers a variety of recreation opportunities including golfing, swimming, tennis, basketball, horseback riding and hiking/riding trails through remote areas of the metropolitan area
