Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the Pecos County seat of Artesia. The population was 973 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 by Tomás Cuellar and his wife Isabel Cuellar as an agricultural community on the east side of the Pecos River. In 1902, Artesia was named after Charles A. Bartlett, a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts who died that year in office. The Cuellars moved to Albuquerque in 1907 and opened a grocery store there which became one of the first successful Hispanic-owned businesses in Albuquerque. From 1916 to 1951, Artesia served as seat of Pecos County government and during this time it lost its independence from Albuquerque but continued to be part of the larger county until it merged with neighboring Grant County in 1951. The center of town is anchored by two blocks of commercial buildings built between 1915 and 1925: the old bank building (now used as an art gallery) and the post office building (now used as a motel). Other notable buildings include: Stonington School (1892), Presbyterian Church (1902), Jack Dempsey's birthplace (1925), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (1932), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1935), Spanish Catholic Church (1950), American Legion Post #527(1964-1965) and United States Post Office No 8784(1978).
