The history of the Army in Artesia, New Mexico goes back to the early days of the town. The first organized military unit in this area was a company of dragoons called the Texas Rangers. These troops were formed in 1827 and served until 1840. In 1846, when Santa Fe was taken by Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War, General Tom Horn ordered all British and Irish soldiers from New Mexico to join his army. This large force marched north through Artesia and other towns in search of supplies and volunteers for what would become known as the Alamo Campaign. Most of these men died at the hands of Mexicans or were captured and executed after being surrendered at Alamogordo. A small number managed to escape and returned home with new stories about their experiences at San Antonio de Bexar (Alamogordo). When war ended, most of these men had deserted or been honorably discharged. Some decided to stay in New Mexico while others homesteaded properties around Artesia. By 1860 there were over 250 white people living in this small community which included some 100 Apache Indians who had also moved into Artesia from southern Arizona Territory during that time period. Because there was no school district within range of candles or schooling for Indian children, many Apaches learned English as they grew older and became able to work on farms outside of town while still attending school inside their village compound near the old adobe mission buildings that still stand today (now part of the Old University Campus).
