The Artesia, New Mexico Army National Guard has been deployed in support of the American military since World War II. The unit is composed of reservists and active duty soldiers, who are mobilized for a variety of purposes including peacekeeping, counter-drugs, and disaster relief. During the Cold War the NM Guard was responsible for guarding strategic areas such as the Albuquerque area. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, NM Guard troops were activated to help maintain law and order in Post-Soviet states. In 2003, Artesia's National Guard detachment was honorably discharged from service after 33 years of service. Since its activation in World War II, Artesia's NM Army National Guard detachment has participated in many deployments across North America. This year marks their fifteenth deployment to Europe where they will be helping with Operation Unified Protector against members of Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL). The unit also deployed to Iraq in 2013 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II; this was their first time deploying outside North America. They have also been called up for various security missions throughout Mexico City which include riot control and counterterrorism operations. Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the mountainous region of northeastern New Mexico. The town was founded by Captain John Fetterman in 1881 as a trading post on the Pecos River. The town's name comes from the Spanish word "artesa," meaning trade or commerce. The first inhabitants of Artesia were Native American holy men and women who roamed the area before it was explored and claimed by Spain. The Santa Fe Trail passed through Artesia in 1829, and prospectors began to arrive in droves in the 1840s. In 1848, General Antonio López de Santa Anna constructed Fort geographical sign at what is now known as mile marker 9 on US 64W. After Mexican independence was declared, various businesses were established throughout New Mexico with traders like Fetterman providing goods and services to Mexicans living inside and outside of Texas. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of Fort numerical sign near what is now known as mile marker 4 on US 64w while seeking refuge from Union troops marching towards Albuquerque. This event helped solidify settlement around present-day Artesia following the war. With population growth came increased infrastructure needs such as schools and hospitals which followed in the 1920s when Artesia became an incorporated city under state law. However, due to economic volatility during World War II most aspects of life changed for the better including more jobs opportunities for locals after government munitions production shifted from downtown Albuquerque to nearby Tonopah Air Force Base during that time period also fostering growth further eastward into Coso County beyond present-day Artesia limits until today’s day when some residents still maintain connections back home despite suburbanization going on elsewhere within easy reach notwithstanding expanding highway Corridor 10 miles past its original boundaries both proximate (Mile Marker 6) and far distant (Mile Marker 8) borders allaying fears about assimilation among some recent arrivals much to their chagrin nonetheless they remain artesian bloodline descendants longitudinally dispersed over many square miles wide stretching east/west nearly 200 miles long since Spanish settlements ended ceded land jointly by Spain & Mexico resulting in considerable intermarriage thereby perpetuating cultural continuity up through current day residents
On October 14, 1912, Artesia became the townsite of what would later become Santa Fe. The town was founded by José María Morelos and Francisco Hidalgo on a small ranch near the Rio Grande. In 1915, New Mexico approved a referendum to annex Artesia as part of the state. The annexation was voted in by residents of both towns, with over 80% in support. The new city quickly grew and annexed other small towns east of it until it had a population of 2,500 people in 1940. It remained an inner-city community through the 1960s and 1970s when more white families moved into the area whileHispanic families continued to live there throughout most of this time period. After years of discontent among Hispanic residents about their lack of representation within city government, Mayor Manuel García announced his candidacy for re-election in 1974 but lost to incumbent Don López
