The Albuquerque Army National Guard has a rich history that goes back to 1881. The unit was organized as the First New Mexico Volunteers on December 3, 1881. At first, the regiment consisted of only men from Albuquerque and Santa Fe County. However, in 1890, the battalion became an artillery battalion and was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Regiment on November 15, 1898. After World War I ended in 1918, the regiment was disbanded and its members were consolidated into other units. However, on October 11, 1920, 1st Infantry Regiment re-organized under the Army National Guard System and re-designated as part of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop (HHT) of 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (4th IBCT). On May 9, 1924 HHT was assigned to 6th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (6th IBCT) which served concurrently with 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (2nd IBCT). In 1936 HHT relocated to Alamogordo Army Air Base where it remained until 1945 when it returned to Albuquerque. On October 16, 1961 1st Infantry Regiment Reactivated at Dona Ana Air Force Base effective date under Military Order No: 453 badge number A1128C1A1/(E14), with motto "For America". The regiment's next activation came on September 10th 1966 when it reactivated at El Paso Army Air Field effective date under Military Order No: 527 badge number A10373C1A2/(E16). In 1970 1st Battalion moved from Dona Ana AFB to Espiritu Santo AFB where it remains today due to its affiliation with Headquarters & Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion (Airborne) New Mexico Cavalry Division Airmobile Museum located near Roswell NM since 1971 .
