The United States Army has been deployed to Alamogordo, New Mexico for over a century. The city is the namesake of Camp Cochrane, which was established in 1863 as part of General Santa Anna's Mexican War Campaign. The military presence in Alamogordo began with the construction of Fort Stanton in 1867. After years of service, the fort was decommissioned in 1912 and its land became home to the old NM State Capitol. In 1969, Fort Stanton was transferred from the USArmy to the NM National Guard and later served as Headquarters for District 8 during operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Finally, in 2006, Fort Stanton underwent renovation and reopened as Camp Cochrane Military Base Museum. Since its establishment at Alamogordo, New Mexico's oldest military installation has played an important role within the community and nation. During World War II, Camp Cochrane served as a training ground for troops responsible for combatting Nazi Germany; during Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-2002), it housed troops involved in searching for Osama bin Laden; and most recently during Operation Neptune's Spear (1996-1997), it provided shelter to thousands of civilians displaced by fighting between narco traffickers and Colombian paramilitary forces. Today, Camp Cochrane continues to play a critical role within American military operations around the world by hosting joint exercises with other nations such as Italy, Spain and Canada. Additionally, all infantry divisions stationed at Camp Cochrane are required to maintain a detachment headquarters unit that provides logistical support for brigade commanders on battlefields around the world. Alamogordo, New Mexico is a small town located in the southern corner of New Mexico. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Alamogordo is known for its gold rush era history and its Museum of Native American Art and History. The first Europeans to visit Alamogordo were Spaniards in 1540 who found mining operations going on there but no gold being extracted. In 1785, Colonel James P. Cooke founded Fort Cooke on the site that would later become Alamogordo and began a search for an ideal place to build a military post because of its location between two mountains and its strategic position near both Mexican and American borderlands. After finding no suitable sites in New Mexico or Arizona, Cooke decided to establish his post at Alamogordo because it had good water supplies and easy access to transportation from Santa Fe. A survey done in 1868 by Captain David Dixon determined that the area around present-day Alamogordo could support up to 10,000 people with plenty of room to maneuver as well as ample natural resources such as coal, oil shale, uranium ore and llamas for meat production. By 1876 only about 1,500 people lived in what is now Alamogordo due largely to disease brought over by travelers who came through the area during the Gold Rush era attracted by Alamo Creek's rich ores (including silver) and abundantata (a type of corn). However, some new settlers had started arriving since Cooke's founding; these included Germans from Hesse-Nuremberg along with their families who had fled religious persecution there; Irish Catholics fleeing famine back home in Ireland; African Americans who had been enslaved on plantations in Texas before they were liberated by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna; Armenians seeking refuge from Ottoman Turkish rule; Mormon missionaries sent out by Brigham Young from Nauvoo Illinois; Mexicans working on Ute Indian reservations nearby; Chinese laborers recruited during World War II for work on Army projects within America’s war effort.; These newcomers helped turn around Almogordo's fortunes beginning in 1881 when many businesses opened up including a grocery store (the first shop ever established west of the Rockies), three hotels/motels (the first commercial development outside San Francisco), two school districts (first public schools open west of the Rockies), six churches/congregations (one mainline Protestant Episcopal Church built soon after); four newspapers were established including The Alcalde which became one of Northern New Mexico's leading weekly publications (); five miles north off Interstate 40 was also founded another business district: White Sands Mining District () which soon yielded valuable minerals such as copperas well as uranium ore worth millions of dollars (). During World War II many civilians lost their lives when Japanese forces invaded California but also many soldiers died fighting various campaigns throughout North America including those fought near Alamogordo especially those surrounding Los Angeles County (). After 1945 most residents returned home although some have continued living there until recently (). Today much has changed at Alamogodos core neighborhood since then with commuter buses running directly into downtown Albuquerque making it easier than ever for locals living close together while still having privacy (); more recently an amusement park called "Alamagordon" has been built just east of downtown providing funfairs year-round while also featuring art galleries/, cinemas/movies (),and restaurants .)
