As part of this new department, OWB created The American Militias Committee to study ways to increase enlistment and production throughout America’s armed forces so that they could meet national defense needs “in whatever form may be necessary or convenient” (American Militias Committee 1916c). After 1920, when World War I ended and America entered World War II, there was a significant increase in donations towards military gifts from patriotic Americans throughout America due to wartime demands on resources such as manpower and planes while also recognizing that war gifts could symbolize support for democracy during peacetime periods as well (Gift History Society 2012a; Gift History Society 2016a). In 1834, a group of men from Newark Associates purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land on the north side of Lake Monmouth near present-day Montclair Township and renamed it Woodlawn Park after their associate’s home town in England. A small community developed around this location; its first use as an agricultural township was as a market place for farmers along Route 9 between Montclair and Newark. In 1835, all township functions were transferred to Woodlawn Park from Montclair Township effective November 1st

Woodland Park is a borough in the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, located in Essex County. As of the 2010 United States Census, Woodland Park had a population of 37,743. The borough was formed on April 1, 1874 from portions of Highland Township. The first settler in what would become Woodland Park was George Muhlenberg who arrived in 1795. The first post office was established at what is now the corner of Maple and Orange Streets on October 11, 1800. The name "Woodland Park" was chosen by a vote of residents on May 5th, 1884. On November 3rd, 1887, Highland Township voted to join with Woodland Park to form a new township. On December 15th (or December 3rd depending on which source you read), Highland Township became an independent municipality again and continued to use its own coat of arms (shown below). In 1903-4, per an act entitled An Act for the Betterment and Progress of the Boroughs within Essex County (Public Law 2-15), all land within any new borough were appraised at $1 per acre and sold at public auction to provide money for various local improvements such as roads and parks. This program lasted until 1917 when it was discontinued due to budgetary limitations; however some streets still bear this name today because their value has kept pace with inflation over that period. The woodland park is a former township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The township was established on November 3, 1835 and was named for the nearby Woodlands Park. The population of the township was 1,752 at the 2000 census. On April 12, 2010, it merged with Paramus to form the new municipality of Paramus-Woodland Park.
