Woodland Park is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,512 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from two parcels of land that were donated by the heirs of John D. Rockefeller to create an urban forest. Woodland Park is located on Haddon Heights Boulevard and Blenheim Road, just east of Princeton University and west of Newark Airport. The first settler in what would become Woodland Park was Elijah Lovejoy, who came to what is now the town in 1824 with his family. In 1828, John D. Rockefeller donated two tracts of land to the town for use as an urban forest. The city block bounded by Maple Avenue (north), Haddon Heights Boulevard (south), and Elm Street (west) became known as "Rockefeller Center." Over time, other area businesses joined forces with Rockefeller Center to form what is today known as "The Zone." In 1957, when New Jersey merged into the United States federal government under President Dwight Eisenhower's Executive Order 12674, Woodland Park became one of 31 towns within 20 miles of Washington DC which were required to develop a housing development for residents commuting into National Capital Region jobsites. In response to this pressure from developers and planners throughout Northern Virginia and Maryland-including many who had contributed money or expertise towards developing Woodlands Park's downtown core-the Town Council authorized construction of a library/administrative building on undeveloped property between Elm Street and Walnut Drive in 1963-1964; this addition served as both administrative center for all issues affecting thetown until 1978 when its new Library Annex opened adjacent thereto on Walnut Drive after years of planning and fundraising led by Town Supervisor Irving Wechtman Sr., then also Borough President Emeritus "It was only after I left office did people really start realizing that we needed something here," Wechtman said about plans for a library before his death in 2009 at age 92... "The idea behind it being close [to Reagan National Airport] didn't come about until later because no one wanted their house next door to Dulles airport." After more than four decades characterized by stagnation or decline due primarily to zoning changes approved without public consultation or vote by unelected officials--a pattern seen throughout much rural New Jersey during that period--increased efforts over several years culminated in passage last year by unanimous vote of both houses of the township council (3-0)of legislation establishing a park district including acreage north and east side streets between Rutgers Avenue/Haddon Heights Boulevard intersection and Broadwalk Avenue/Route 9 interchange will be dedicated solely for children’s play areas while funding source TBD yet announced; design concepts are underway including canopy style roofs with solar panels providing energy storage; final touches may include driveways leading off street parking lots
