The United States Navy has a long and rich history in Woodbury, New Jersey. The Navy was founded on September 12, 1775, when the Continental Congress passed an act to create a navy. The first U.S. warship to be built in New Jersey was the Pemaquid (fired on July 29, 1776), which was constructed by naval engineer Samuel Slater at the shipyard of John Brown & Sons in Clymer Township. Naval Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered the USS Essex (CV-9) launched from Camden Naval Shipyard on December 5, 1931 as part of the centennial celebration of America’s freedom and independence. The USS Constitution (CVA-12) also participated in this commemoration with its launching ceremony on December 5th herself. On November 20th, 1944, Vice Admiral Chester Nimitz laid down his specification for a new type of destroyer called “Abe Lincoln” after President Abraham Lincoln who had championed naval reform during his time in office. Construction began on June 10th 1945 and finished three months later on September 9th 1946; making Abe Lincoln one of only two destroyers ever completed under Nimitz’s command – the other being USS Holland (DDG-1). USS Abraham Lincoln currently resides at Treasure Island Naval Museum where she is open to the public every day except Mondays when she is out of commission visiting her namesake city again!
