The National Guard of New Jersey has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The first national guard unit was organized in 1777, and served as security for the colonies during the war. The 1st New Jersey Regiment served in the Battle of Saratoga and other engagements. After the war, many soldiers who had fought in America’s Revolution returned home and formed new units of the national guard. In 1814, however, when New York State seceded from the United States, all state militias were disbanded and all uniformed soldiers were turned over to federal custody. In 1827, Congress passed an act organizing a national guard regiment for New Jersey. And so began a long tradition of providing security for our state with military forces. Today, there are more than 120 active ranger battalions spread throughout New Jersey and 10 reserve battalion companies that can be activated at any time.
