Coffee has been a part of the daily lives of many in Woodbury for over 150 years. In 1878, Swedish immigrants Ole and Anna Soderberg started selling coffee from a small shop on Broadway. The Soderbergs were among the first to import coffee to America, and their shop was one of the first to have water line service. At that time, most cafes did not have machines to grind their own beans. Coffee began being brewed at home by family members or friends in the early 1800s. In 1893, John D’Angelo opened his first roastery and café in downtown Woodbury. This business became known as “The Coffee House” because it served coffee all day long until about 5pm. Eventually other businesses followed suit and the building was converted into apartments during prohibition (1920-1924). In 1929, Dutchman Johan Eiken rented an old warehouse on Broad Street for two years and started making espresso drinks called Java Joes. He named his business “Java Joe” because he wanted people in Woodbury to be able to enjoy good espresso without having to go out into town. Java Joe soon became very popular in town, and he continued making drinks there until his death in 1951. In 1966, Bob Baxendale opened his first cafe, The Coffee House Bar & Grill (later renamed Bob's Cafe), on Market Street in Woodbury. This business became known as “Bob's Café” because it served coffee all day long until about 5pm (except Mondays when it closed at 4pm). Over time other businesses followed suit and the building was converted into apartments during prohibition (1920-1924). In 1984, Harry Gibbons opened his first cafe called Harry Gibbons' Place which is now known as "Harry Gibbons' Dairy" on Main Street in Woodbury Heights! This business became known as "Harry Gibbons' Cafeteria" because it served food all day long until about 5pm except Monday when it closed at 4pm! It is still open today!
