The name Woodbury is most commonly associated with the town in New Jersey which was founded by English settlers in 1788. The area now known as Woodbury was first settled by the Lenape Native people and was known as Seneca Village. In 1814, the land that now includes Woodbury was acquired by Colonel James Wilson from the Lenape nation for £5,000. Colonel Wilson named his new town after General George Washington who had been Commandant of Fort Point on Long Island during the American Revolution. The town quickly became a thriving center for trade and commerce and its citizens were some of the earliest to adopt Freemasonry as a way of life. Today, Woodbury is an affluent community located just outside of Philadelphia along Interstate 95. Its residents are highlyeducated and have played an important role in both local politics and finance throughout their history. The Coast Guard has been providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief since the late 1800s. In 1924, the Coast Guard began importing American-made radios to help in coastal emergencies. The first coast guard station was opened at Governors Island in New York City in 1927. The Coast Guard continued to provide emergency services until 1971, when they became a part of the Department of Homeland Security. Since then, the Coast Guard has become an important part of US national security and rescue efforts during natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and Sandy. In 2010, the Coast Guard purchased 11 Airbus A330 planes for use in their Search and Rescue mission. These planes can be used for transportation and storage as well as for combat missions if needed. Additionally, the Coast Guard is responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of coastline across America. In recent years, there have been concerns that some countries may not be able to meet their obligations under United Nations peacekeeping forces treaties. Woodbury is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Woodbury is part of the Camden, NJ-ISE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Woodbury were Dutch and French traders who landed on the now-defunct island of Monmouth in 1609 and 1704 respectively. In 1831, woodrimmon (a type of chestnut) trees were found near where the current post office stands on what is now Elmwood Avenue. A sawmill was built in 1835 and continued operation until 1927; it employed up to 200 men during its heyday. The mill closed because of financial troubles and competition from other mills in neighboring towns such as Unionville and East Brunswick. In 1870, local farmer George Beadle donated land for a school district which would include present-day Woodbury Township; Buena Vista School District was formed from parts of four other school districts that year: Rahway, Sayreville, Carteret Island Borough and East Brunswick Township. The opening ceremony for Buena Vista School District took place on November 3rd with Drs James Hennepin (1827-1915), John Copley (1829-1920) and Augustus Muhlenberg (1832-1922) officiating as trustees administering the new school system which became known as "Hennepin Schools". It wasn't until 1915 when Griggs Elementary School opened - one year after Carteret Island Borough had its own elementary school! In 1911, work began on building what would become River High School; it opened in 1912 as Northampton Regional High School before becoming River Valley High School in 1966. During World War II there was a large airfield located just outside town that served as training ground for numerous American planes including bombers such as the P-40 Warhawk and Dauntless dive bombers; many people live within walking distance of this airfield today thanks to various trails running through or parallel to it! After the war ended there was a large increase in population growth throughout Hunterdon County due to farmsteads being erected along major roads leading intotown from outlying areas; by 1960 there were over 1,000 residents living within five miles of town limits! As this growth occurred businesses began moving into downtownWoodbury whileresidential buildings remained clustered around Elmwood Ave & Main St.; beginning with Cook's Drug Store & Grill moved into their current location on Elmwood Ave just south of Market Street back in 1978!
The first permanent settler in the area was Nicholas Woodbury, who arrived in 1732. He built a house on the present site of Woodbury Township. The township was organized in 1834.
