The first shooters in Westwood, New Jersey were the Earls of Bridgewater who settled in 1795. The area was part of Middlesex County until 1812 when it became Union Township. A rifle club was founded in 1825 and a shotgun club in 1830. Rifle matches were held at various locations including the old Dutch Reformed church on Perry Street where they still are scheduled annually. In 1851, a shotgun range was opened by Capt. John Wolkowitz on Arlington Avenue west of present day High School property which would become the home of manyWestwood shooting events over the years. Shotgun matches were also held at local hotels until about 1920 when all such events moved to local ranges due to deterioration of infrastructure and registration difficulties with hotel guests claiming too much credit for wins. In 1906, Revs. George Fenton and James McCarthy organized a militia unit to help protect citizens during the American Civil War and shortly afterwards formed an organization called “The Legionnaires” to promotegun safety through instruction and demonstrations at public schools across Westchester County (now northern Manhattan). This group put on exhibits featuring gun safety topics at various community centers while also sponsoring shooting contests at local fields from 1909-1910 inclusive. In 1916, The Legionnaires merged with another pro-gun organization called The Citizens Committee for Gun Safety which became known as The Riflemen’s Protective Association (RCA). RCA sponsored 4 formal open air shootings each year from 1915 thru 1923 as well as exhibitions featuring NRA-sponsored firearmsafety programs throughout southeast New York State; these displays typically included models or replica firearms from leading manufacturers along with informative bullet tips for adults and children attending school back then . Westwood is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Mercer County and was formed from the merger of West Township and East Township on November 14, 1838. The name "Westwood" comes from two places: Old Westwood in Sussex County and Woodstock Hill in Monmouth County. The first settler in what would become Westwood was Nicholas de Ferrante, who arrived in 1798. Because of its location on the Susquehanna River opposite Philadelphia for shipping purposes, Westwood became a manufacturing center early on. In 1825, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill at present-day Woodbridge Township, just north of where today's Main Street intersects Route 206. By 1830, over 100 small businesses were located in and around what are now town limits of Westwood and adjacent villages including Northumberland Heights (now Auburn), Mount Holly (now Little Falls), and Springdale (now Parsippany). In 1837, when Mercer County was created from portions of Middlesex and Union Counties, part of the new county included land east of the Susquehanna River that lay within what would become Westwood township.. On November 14th.,1838 this area became part of MercerCounty when it was merged with parts of Huntingdon & Union Counties to form that county. The original name for our township which we still use today - Easton - came about because our original home site lay east across Trenton Creek from Waterford (west side) & Allentown (& Our Lady Of Mt Carmel churchyard to the south). During prohibition days many people decided to stay away from alcohol due to social restrictions put into place by local officials.# Many residents left during this time as well so we can say WESTWOOD has had an interesting history! #
