The first national guard unit was organized on November 15, 1792 by President George Washington as an effort to provide security for the country during the time of revolution. The unit was called the 1st Regiment of Artillery. In 1804, Congress created the 3rd Regiment of Infantry and made it part of the National Guard. In 1916, Congress created the 4th Infantry Division and made it part of the National Guard. The unit served in World War I and World War II before being disbanded in 1946. In 1951, Congress created the 5th Infantry Division and made it part of the National Guard. The division served in Korea and Vietnam before being disbanded in 1973. Since then, there have been multiple iterations of how national guard units can be formed or renamed based on changing needs or events within America. Today’s version is known as Combat Support Units (CSU). CSUs are typically composed of infantry battalions that serve as point-of-contact for Army brigades conducting operations outside their home state or province; they also provide logistical support for brigade commanders while concurrently performing other tasks such as providing security at events or training soldiers from other states or countries onto American soil. Today, the National Guard consists of more than 101,000 activeduty soldiers and airmen, plus 150,000 reservists.
On July 1, 1846, Westwood became the incorporated town of Westwood Township in Middlesex County. It was named for Samuel Westwood, a wealthy landowner and politician who served as a U.S. Representative from New Jersey in the early 19th century. The township had a population of just over 100 people when it was founded. In 1892, the East Newark Shipbuilding Company was founded in what is now East Newark and built two shipyards that produced vessels for both commercial and military use. During World War II, the company produced ships for the Allies at one point supplying more than 350 vessels with parts and supplies. In 1951, the company merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to become United States Steel Corporation. Over time, United States Steel Corporation grew into one of America's largest industrial companies with production plants throughout North America including operations in Mexico City; Windsor, Ontario; Erie County, Pennsylvania; and Wilmington Delaware. Westwood Township underwent several changes during its history including becoming an all-mail community on May 1st 1922 after residents voted unanimously to adopt that status; becoming part of Edison Municipal School District on October 1st 1948 following a referendum vote by residents; being annexed by Passaic Borough on February 17th 1957 which made it the second borough within Passaic County to be annexed; becoming part of Paterson Municipality on January 1st 1966 following a referendum vote by residents; being separated from Passaic Borough on March 15th 1990 due to population growth within its boundaries – this separation results in today's lone borough form between Paterson Municipality and Essex County municipalities (the other three are Hackensack Boroughs). The township has experienced rapid growth since 1990 as various businesses have moved into its borders - most notably Google LLC who relocated their headquarters from California to Camden NJ before moving again later that year across the river into new facilities in South Orangeburg Township - which has led to redevelopment along Route 378 particular around Great Lakeshore Drive where numerous high-end retailers have opened up shop such as Macy's Inc., Sears Holdings Corp., JCPenney Co., Nordstrom Department Store LLP., Apple Inc., Nike Inc., Sears Holding Corp.'s Kmart stores among others Today there are over 20 businesses operating within its borders making it one ofNJ’s most active business districts
