Westwood was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Middlesex and Union counties. Westwood was founded in 1812 by John Westwood and his brother-in-law Daniel Webster as a farming community on the west side of what is now called Weequahic River. They named their community after the wooded area near Westwood Manor in England where they had lived before moving to America. In 1828, John Westwood donated land to form what is now known as Park Ridge Cemetery. In 1835, two brothers by the name of Caldwells purchased some land east of Westwood and developed it into Caldwell Heights which became one of the most expensive areas in New Jersey for housing development during that time period. The Caldwell family continued to own or control much of this land until 1914 when it passed out of hands to other families including the Roosevelts who used it for hunting and agricultural purposes before selling it all off to developers in 1935. The first post office opened in 1837 and remained open until 1861 when Westwood village consolidated with nearby Easton into a single municipality under the name "Middlesex Township". The first Mayor of Middlesex Township was James Whelan who served from May 8, 1840 – December 7, 1841. On November 25th 1865, during American Civil War (1861–1865), General Robert Enever Battlefield arrived at West Wood Junction from Trenton with orders to attack Fort Hudson on Long Island City's waterfront - Battlefield successfully destroyed Fort Hudson but lost his life while doing so; however this event remains celebrated each year as Battlefields Day locally in memory of him. In 1870, a new schoolhouse was built within walking distance of downtownWest Wood Village with instruction starting on Monday mornings until 1906 when Friday morning classes began due to changing educational needs across districts throughout New Jersey due to increasing numbersImmigrants coming overland from Europe seeking work opportunities during that time period were essential for filling those needs since no schools existed for them back then (the opening of institutions like Rutgers University occurred later). This school building still stands today next door to Verizon Wireless Headquarters just southbound lanes off I-95 bypassing Downtown Newark completely providing an interesting look back into our town’s history
