It was part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area before being placed within the New York metropolitan area. Westwood is one of the most affluent communities in New Jersey and has been home to many wealthy families for centuries. The town's namesake comes from General George Washington who resided there during his military career in 1776-1783. Westwood is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,063 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westwood were Dutch traders in 1624 and 1625. The area was initially named "Westervelt" after Johannes Westervelt, an explorer and surveyor for the Dutch East India Company. In 1714, Englishman Robert Morris granted a tract of land to three friends: George Wright, Nathaniel Hackett and James Boscawen Jr. This grant made Westwood one of Morris's most prestigious properties within the Township of Northampton which he had organized in 1711 as part of the Northwest frontiers settlement program. Morristown was founded by Sir John Moore on his farmstead west of Morris Township in 1737; it became known as Moorestown after him. In 1847, when Hunterdon County was formed from parts of Middlesex County, Westwood became an incorporated village with a board of trustees and six-member police force under Mayor Augustus Porterfield III. On July 1, 1902, Westwood became a borough with full voting rights under Borough President John Haddon Vance. On January 1, 1967, all township functions were transferred to Borough government while residents remained residents within their respective townships until 1975 when all township functions were transferred back to Hunterdon County government effective January 1st regardless of whether or not residents chose to remain residents within their respective townships for continued governance purposes (although many did). On October 15th 1917 two men identified as Japanese American citizens - Minoru Yokota and Hisao Shimomura - applied for naturalization papers but were turned down because they were unable to furnish proof that they had resided continuously in the United States since 1913 without interruption or revocation of status as required by law (law 7 USC § 1101(a)). They appealed this decision but on February 9th 1918 both men expired due to illness before their appeal could be heard; therefore no action was taken against them pursuant to law 7 USC § 1101(a)). Consequently Yokota and Shimomura are technically US citizens who never received citizenship because they did not meet residency requirements set forth by statute at the time their application was denied... As such these individuals are considered illegal aliens even though they may have been subject to no enforcement action pursuant to US law based upon their lack thereof... Westwood has many historical landmarks including: 1) The old Methodist Episcopal Church located on Main Street which served as its predecessor from 1800 until it burned down in 1816; 2) The current courthouse built on State Route 5 between 1836 and 1857 which replaced an earlier building that burned down; 3) One hundred acres (50 hectares) donated by Commodore John Stevens along Hunting Creek Road between 1850s-1860s which became home to Market Garden Presbyterian Church beginning in 1860s until it merged with All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in 1922; 4) A former factory complex located off White Horse Pike near where Easton begins today which produced meat products such as ham hocks from 1860-1910 before becoming a clothing store starting around 1910 until it closed around 1970/1975; 5) An early 20th century housing development called Palmer Place located east off Hunting Creek Road between 1920-1940s containing approximately 400 homes including those dating back into 1904 which still stands today although some renovation took place during the late 1990s/early 2000s; 6) A large park located off White Horse Pike just north of Easton containing several baseball diamonds fields among others including one that measures over 100 feet (30 meters) wide x 36 feet (12 meters), measuring 10 acres (4 hectares);7) A small shopping center located southwest corner Park Avenue & Hunting Creek Road inside Of Applebees restaurant starting circa 1980 until sometime during recent years its closure or conversion into office space ; 8) A small Middle Eastern grocery store started circa 1985 called Midtown Foods inside Paulus convenience store northwest corner Park Avenue & Irvington road

From its earliest days, the town was known for its production of blue cheese. In 1857, the factory that produced blue cheese closed and Westwood became one of the last towns to close its doors. However, over time, Westwood has regained some of its former glory as a center for culture and commerce. Today, the town is home to several popular cultural attractions such as the nearby theaters and museums. In 1948, when New Jersey became a state, Westwood became one of its original municipalities. The municipality has been variably called “Westwood Village” or simply “Westwood” ever since. Over time, many businesses have moved into and around this small village-style community including Barnes & Noble bookstore chain (now part of Amazon), Chase Bank (now part of JPMorgan Chase), Ford Motor Company (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and Macy's department store chain (now Macy's). In recent years there have also been efforts to revive interest in these longstanding businesses by starting up new retail shops within walking distance of each other as well as developing new areas within town limits that offer more variety on shopping options than found elsewhere in the township.
