Here we'll take a look at four of the most popular types of coffee used in the military, and explain how they work – or not work – when it comes to fighting. Coffee beans are ground into small pieces which is then heated up until it starts to expand. This expansion causes liquid nitrogen (a cold gas) to be drawn up from inside the bean, freezing it solid so that caffeine can be extracted. The cold gas also creates an intense air/fuel mixture which is then burned off by the engine, providing power for combat operations. The first type of coffee used in warfare was Italian Roasts which were mainly used for artillery spotting during World War 1. However, due to their high acidity levels, these beans didn't do well in battle and were replaced by French Roasts which proved more effective at suppressing enemy fire while being less harmful to soldiers' health. French Roasts remained in use until after World War 2 when bitter taste became common with troops moving away from artillery duty towards infantry roles. During World War 2 Japanese Coffee was also increasingly being used as part of battlefield supplies due its long shelf life and ability to withstand harsh conditions in storage warehouses. A farming community founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 near what is now East Brunswick Township originated as "Westfalia", an alternate spelling of "Westerford". In 1795, John Derryman purchased rights to what are now parts of Passaic and Middlesex Counties from James Wright for £1 million. He renamed the community "Derrytown" after his home province Ireland. In 1800, George Washington visited Derrytown while he was touring western Pennsylvania and recommended that settlers erect fences around their farms to prevent Native Americans from stealing crops and cattle; this led to erection of miles (kilometers) of fencing throughout northeastern New Jersey during the early 19th century. In 1814 David Levy bought some land east of present-day Westfield from Jabez Ratcliffe for £500; Levy named his new tract "Levy's Plains". When Rutgers University moved from Newark to Metuchen in 1827 and opened its own building adjacent to Levy's Plains (now known as Old State House Plaza), students lived on Levy's Plains until they could be housed elsewhere on campus.
