Westfield is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on February 14, 1834 from the merger of two small villages, Westfield Center and Westfield Township. The population was 23,362 at the 2010 census. The earliest European settlement in what is now Westfield occurred in 1702 when Captain John Smith and his men landed there as part of a mapping expedition led by George Washington. By 1800, the area had grown to include present-day Westfield Township and parts of adjacent Mercer County. The first store opened in 1824 in what is now the heart of town. At its peak during the 1830s, Westfield had a population of about 2,000 people; however it declined after Congregationalists began moving out from around Philadelphia to establish their own churches farther west. In 1835, the first school was built: one classroom for 5 students and an attached stable used as a barn for teaching farm animals. The township/village site was chosen because it was well suited for farming due to its location between two major rivers – Delaware River on one side and Hackensack Creek on the other – with ample access to water resources and good soil quality. The original name for the town – "Westford" – originated from this fact. On February 14th (the day before Trenton) of that year, a meeting held at home of Captn John Smith resulted in the organization of what would become Morris County by order of President James Kinsman into four townships: Northampton (including present-day Uniondale), Southwark ( including Newark), East Windsor lobe (including Sayreville), and Westford which included all present-day Morris Township as well as portions of Asbury Park Township and Hackensack Borough). In 1839–40 Davidoff & Son built a millrace leading from Delaware River through present-day Uniondale to Hackensack Creek which became known as "Davidoff's Mill". This mill provided commercial water power for local mills until 1895 when transmission lines were constructed linking larger mills across Pennsylvania allowing them to use more expensively powered turbines which rendered Davidoff's Mill obsolete. A post office called "Westford" was established in 1825; it changed its name to "Morris" in 1840 due to confusion with nearby Philadelphia; it reverted back to "Morris" again upon becoming part of Warren county during 1870 boundaries changes following American Civil Wariraion In 1865 Morristown Station opened on NJ Transit's Pascagoula Line providing passenger service within Morristown until 1978 when it closed down entirely following Amtrak's abandonment of steam locomotives within New Jersey

Westfield, New Jersey is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,816 at the 2010 census. Westfield is home to the Westfield Mall and was incorporated as a village on April 14, 1875. On July 1, 1914, it became a borough. As of the 2010 Census, its population had increased to 24,146. The oldest part of Westfield is thought to date back to the time of the Dutch settlement in what is now Middlesex County in 1624-25 and 1627-29. A mill founded by Nicholas de Vries (1598-1678) on White Horse Creek near present day East Brunswick served local farmers until 1711 when English traders took over operation and began selling woolen cloth for North America. In 1713 Nicholas’ daughter married John Thomson of Newark who purchased land east of White Horse Creek from George Washington for £50 per acre (the equivalent of $1 million today). This area would later become known as Thomson's Point because much of it still stands today including most notably: The Thomson House which was built in 1814 by James Thomson III (1783-1846), cofounder with his father James Thomson II (1758-1835) and uncle Daniel Webster (1765-1843), both Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of State; The old arsenal that continues to be used as an armory by Sussex County Sheriff’s Department; The original post office building erected between 1812 and 1830 on Church Street ; And other significant buildings including Christ Episcopal Church which was built c 1830 on what is now Kress Road adjacent to Drexel University; All these structures are open for visitation during regular business hours either through the Museum staff or via guided tours given by heritage interpreters who have knowledge about each structure’s history and significance. As early as 1768 there were reports that “a very good place hath been found whereon they build excellent huts without any intermission...A great number Scotsmen have settled hereabouts since our government came into force…about two hundred families live here agreeableably...None but parsimonious men can maintain themselves without assistance from others…Many rich people have come hither during this war [the American Revolution] with their cattle & Effects… many fine houses have been erected since then." At first these settlers were self sufficient but soon started looking for ways to get more help from others so they could continue growing crops and raising livestock etcetera while also paying taxes towards government coffers which helped keep them afloat financially despite various challenges faced by their contemporaries like malaria/diphtheria epidemics hitting hard after British military intervention support troops struggling against Native Americans raiding settlements indiscriminately etcetera resulting in someMassachusetts Bay Colony landowners losing almost all their land within 10 years largely due credit card debts , high prices for commodities imported from Great Britain (& Europe ) following War ); By 1800 only 2 out 5 surviving male colonists remaining in Boston managed £300 sterling ($4,000 approx) annually plus costs associated with running plantations—this compares unfavorably with thosestill owning 400 acres or less in 1700 receipts generated ($2 million today)—ptly characteristicof late colonial era rural society .
