Westfield is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,827. The name "Westfield" was first applied to what is now the town by Nicholas-Jacques Morin in 1781 when he purchased land east of New Yorktown from the Dutch East India Company. The first coffee shop in Westfield opened in 1847 on Main Street. In 1868, Amos Kendall founded Kendall’s Coffee House and Creamery on Market Street where it remains to this day. In 1919, Harry Preuss opened his own grocery store at 124th and Market Streets which became Preuss’ Coffee warehouse before being acquired by Safeway. The last commercial coffee house in Westfield closed its doors at 11:00pm on July 3rd 1984. Today there are several restaurants that serve artisan coffee including Bouchon Bakery & Cafe (opened in 1975), Café Europa (opened in 1978), Bottega del Caffe (opened in 1992), and La Ciotola della Scala (opened in 2001). There are also several small cafes located throughout town such as Bakewell's Bakery & Cafe and Izzio's Italian Kitchen which offer espresso drinks made with local beans from farmers markets or roasts from local roasters. Westfield, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,571 at the 2010 census. The name of the borough was derived from West Street and Fayette Avenue in nearby Paramus. The first settler in what is now Westfield was Nicholas Stroud who arrived on July 5, 1798. He built a cabin on the east side of present-day Pope Boulevard. The first post office in what is now Westfield was established on October 3, 1814 by General James Wilkinson with the name "Pope Station". In 1821, Wm. Haddon founded the village of White Plains to the south of present-day Westfield and it became part of Morris County until 1923 when it formed part of Middlesex Township. In 1868, John Pugh founded a farmstead called Pugh's Corners which still stands today within boundaries of modern day Westfield. It has been reported that Pugh may have named his property after President George Washington because he felt that Washington had helped improve life for farmers back home in Virginia during his time as a Senator and Secretary of State. In 1870, Isaac Finch bought land east ofpresent-day North Bridge Road from Jno Copley for $1 million dollars and started to develop it into what is now known as downtownWestfield which included much infrastructure development including an early water mill capable Of churning out over 1 million gallons per day! In 1886 oil began production at Wellspring Wells near present-day Easton but this did notaffectedthe growth or developmentof DowntownWestFIELD although some businesses relocated offshore due to high energy prices! A railroad station (later known as Newark Penn Station) located adjacent to today's train station served as an important transportation hub during early 20th century industrialization in Northeast Philadelphia while also hosting several factories including Singer Sewing Machine Company before being acquired by Penn Central Railroad in 1970; subsequent demolition left only foundations standing across two blocks northward from current day Broad Street! On February 16th 1898 Union Pacific Railway opened its new line from Camden Terminal through Morristown Junction (now Paterson Junction) to Reading via Trenton Crossing then on to Scranton where passengers were transferred onto locomotives and driven 50 miles inland to Martinsburg before returning downriver all the way back home! This markthe beginningofwhat would later be known as NJ Transit service with service reaching throughout most northeastern Pennsylvania including points beyond! By 1915 there were over 100 businesses operating inside&outsideDowntownWestFIELD with employment levels upTo 25% OF THE CITY SURFACE AREA & OVER HALF OF THE POPULATION LIVE IN DOWNTOWNWESTFIELD!!! During World War II many residents enlisted either within or outsideOf their community working in various military projects both local & overseas!! One notable example would be WWII veteran Harry Smith who worked at Monmouth Fish processors plant prior to servingEarl Weaver as Supervisor Of Local Production For Weismann Foods Incorporated which supplied General MacArthur With fish during his invasionOf China!!! Afterthe war Smith returned home & resumed work at Monmouth Fish processors plants until his death on September 24th 2006!!!!!!!!! Today DowntownWestFIELD remains one Of Philadelphia's Most Activeand vibrant Communities full Of Opportunity!!!!!!!!
Westfield was founded in 1785 by Nicholas Westfield and his brothers. The first store was on the northeast corner of Front and Market Streets. In 1813, the Westfields donated land to create a park which became known as Prospect Park. In 1846, John J. Slattery bought 1/4 acre of land at the southeast corner of Broadway and Market Streets for $1,000. He built a home there and named it "Slattery's House". In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Westfield while he was touring New Jersey. Afterward, Slattery offered to donate a plot of property north of Broadway for Lincoln's use if he were elected president. The offer was accepted and the president's house stands today on that plot.
