Westfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,828 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Middlesex County and the second-largest municipality in New Jersey after Newark. The first settler in what is now Westfield was Nicholas White who arrived on horseback from England on November 5, 1681. He named his new homestead "Westfield" after himself and another Englishman, William Westfeldt. The land that became Westfield was swampy and difficult to farm because of its location between two mountain ranges – the Mercer Range to the north and the Monmouth Mountains to the south. Nevertheless, White did manage to produce some crops and build a house there by 1725. In 1824, John Cohan purchased 3/4 of township from Nicholas White for $2 per acre ($40 per acre today). At that time it was one of only a few townships (and one of only three in New Jersey) that were not granted specific boundaries by royal charter oraddock estate map. From then until 1834, Cohan managed to keep control of most aspects of township life including elections, government services, education and land ownership; he also built roads and bridges within his own borders. In 1836 Cohan sold all but 2/3 of his holdings back to Nicholas White with an understanding that he would continue management as part of an overall plan for township growth which included annexing portions of neighboring municipalities such as Newton Township (to the east) and Bound Brook Township (to the west). In 1814, Westfield Township formed from part of Elizabethtown Township. On July 1, 1836, portions of Elizabethtown Township were annexed into Westfield Township. On January 1, 1841, parts of Elizabethtown Township were again annexed into Westfield township. The first post office in Westfield was opened in 1798.
