Westfield is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 24,611. It was named for George Westfield (1764-1837), an early settler and merchant in the area. The first settlement in what is now Westfield was made on May 8, 1784 when Nicholas Hargrave settled at Bound Brook Township. On December 12, 1814, settlers from Newark arrived and founded the community of Willowick around which they built their homes. In 1825, they changed their name to Westfield after George Washington Westfeldt who had bought a parcel of land east of Willowick from developer Elias Howe. The town grew rapidly as people moved into it from areas such as Newark and Jersey City. In 1872-73, construction began on the first bridge over Passaic River to connect Westfield with PlainFIELD; this bridge would become known as "the Big Bridge" because it was large enough for two coaches to cross at once. In 1916-1917 three wars were fought near or within town limits: World War I (April 19 – October 11), World War II (December 7 – January 6), and the Korean War (July 25 – September 27). Many military personnel who served during these wars are buried here including First Lieutenant Julius Petersen and Sergeant William Gorman from Trenton who were killed while fighting in South Korea on September 27th 1951 A&E network program “Wild Bill” featured footage of WWI veterans marching through town honoring those killed there On July 15th 1923 local Mayor John Dolan announced that he would run for township president against incumbent James J. Byrne but withdrew before he could win due to health concerns By 1930 Union Carbide Company had built its plant in east suburban Homesteads providing jobs for many locals including future Mayor John Fenton In 1934 Mayor Fenton proposed that municipalities form a joint committee to study ways to improve transportation within municipalities by creating roadsrunner services between them called " Penn's Run ". This proposal failed but later became known as "Fenton's Plan". By 1937 Borough President Charles Pappas suggested that residents move out of their homes into new apartments so that more space could be provided for businesses within the township . The idea gained some traction but ultimately failed when members of Council objected to having too much commercial development near schools . After years of discussion no action was taken until February 9th 1949 when council approved plans by developers Harry Weisman and Isaac Lipsky which would create 4 blocks north west of city limits along Rte 57 - dubbed "The Villages". These developments included several high rise buildings which still stand today including One Fifth Ave., One Sixth Ave., One Seventh Ave., Two Eighth Ave., Fourteenth St., Seventeenth St., Eighteenth Stdivisional Headquarters building housing both municipal offices as well as client services divisions for fifteen companies representing various industries

The library opened its doors to the public on October 15th, 1916. The town continued to grow over time and by 1930 there were more than 4,500 residents living in WestFIELDtownship! By 1950 however, real estate prices had started dropping throughout New Jersey so much so that many businesses within WestFIELDtownship closed their doors or relocated away from the city altogether due to competition from cheaper alternatives - including neighboring cities like Paterson and Glassboro NJ! Today’s day-to-day life is very different inside what once were some of New Jersey’s largest zip codes – specifically 90823 – home to some 30000+ residents! Despite this change however; there are still plenty OF reminders left behind both inside AND outside our walls! One example being just past your front door; at least 5 large stone “WESTFIELD NATIONALS” can be found perched atop high rises all around your neighborhood!!! These landmarkstones date back almost 2 centuries now (dating back even further than some old maps!) And yet again reminder that not only did our ancestors come from far away but they left an indelible legacy behind too!!
