Coffee growers in West New York and Hackensack region have been making coffee since the 1800s. The first commercial coffee beans were grown in what is now Hackensack, NJ, in 1847. In the 1920s, farmers started planting coffee trees near the Hopewell Reservoir in West New York. By 1930, more than fifty farms had planted coffee trees in that area.
West New York is a borough in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is bounded on the north by Times Square and Lexington Avenue, on the east by Park Slope and Bensonhurst, on the south by Brooklyn, and on the west by Staten Island. The population was 709,362 as of 2010[2] within the 5 boroughs of New York City. West New York is one of two localities within Manhattan which are not part of either the Bronx or Brooklyn. The original inhabitants were Dutch who founded what is now West Nyack in 1624. English colonists arrived in 1627 and called it Newtown; after Newark, their capital at that time. In 1776, when Great Britain divided up its colonies intoots new British Province of Upper Canada with boundaries including most of present-day Westchester County (now southwestern Queens) to the east, Nova Scotia (then part of Canada) to the north, and Staten Island (then part of Long Branch) to the west,[3][4] Newtown became an incorporated town under English law--the first such community in America.[5][6][7] The townsspeople quickly adopted English names for themselves: Monmouthshire for Upper Canadian settlers living near Moncton; Oxfordshire for those living near Oxford; Middlesex for people from Middlesex County; Kingston upon Hull for those from Kingston upon Hull Township; Newtown Valley for people from eastern Newtown Township (now Vernon Hills); Menemsha Peninsula for residents along Long Beach Boulevard between Canarsie Bayou and Hempstead Creek;[8] while some residents kept Dutch surnames such as Heerenveen or Hooge Vensterman until they were no longer welcome in polite society. In 1834 Broadway became a county road connecting Ridgefield Village to Valhalla Cemetery before becoming an express way leading southeast from Manhattan through Kingsbridge Village then Midtownville towards Englewood Cliffs acrossstate highways 228 and 914 to finally reach Ridgefield Village where it joined US 1 Alternate eastbound at exit 12B onto I-95 South towards Rochester Airport

West New York, once part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, was first settled by English colonists in 1624. The area became known as West Nyack after the original settlement site was located in present-day East Nyack Township. In 1814, the United States acquired what is now New Jersey from Great Britain and annexed it into its territory; this action helped create the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The town of West Nyack continued to exist until it merged with neighboring East Nyack Township on April 1, 1898. The early history of West Nyack is complex and there are several significant moments in its development. One important event that occurred during these pioneer days was the Battle of Fort George on October 14, 1624 which resulted in a victory for English forces over Dutch troops. This battle marked an important turning point in colonial America as it helped solidify English control over what is now New York State. Additionally, John Woolley—a prominent landowner and settler in the area—became one of the earliest backers of American independence when he donated land to support the cause during the 1776 Revolution. Another noteworthy event that took place at this time involved skirmishes between British andDutch forces along what is now called Elizabeth Street in downtown West Nyack. These fights often resulted in small skirmishes but were ultimately fought out more effectively due toEnglish artillery that could fire shot up into the sky instead of relying on muskets which were easily broken by enemy gunfire
The area now known as West New York, New Jersey was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 16th century. The area became part of English New Netherland after the British gained control of the colony in 1776. The area was renamed New Jersey in 1781 after the state was created from parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The population of West New York grew rapidly during the 18th century, reaching a peak in the mid-1820s. However, began to decline during the 19th century as immigration slowed and manufacturing switched from agriculture to textiles and other services. In 1901, West New York became part of newly formed Garden State Parkway Authority and was designated a town within that authority. In 1959, Garden State Parkway Authority merged with another statewide agency, the States Highway Department, to form the present day NJ Transit Corporation.
