The New Jersey National Guard was organized on July 1, 1776 as a result of the Continental Congress’s Resolution that called for the arming and training of “ militaries to maintain the public peace.” The Militia Act of 1814 authorized the creation of 2nd Infantry Regiment, NJNG and 3rd Infantry Regiment, NJNG. These regiments were redesignated as Companies A & B in 1846 and 1861, respectively. In 1916, Company D (1st Battalion), NJNG was raised from Reserve soldiers in Trenton under command of Maj. Gen. John Totten. On October 12th, 1916 these men became Company C (2nd Battalion) NJNG when it was re-designated from Company D (1st Battalion). In 1932 both companies were reactivated as part of Second battalion American Legion Regimental Headquarters unit at Wanaque barracks with Headquarters being moved there in 1936 due to its proximity to Newark airport. In 1940 both companies affiliation wit the American Legion had been severed so they were again re-activated as Company C (2nd Battalion) NJNG which stayed until 1952 when it reverted back to its original name Companies A-D.(1st Battalion)NJNG

Wanaque, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. Wanaque is located on the west bank of the Passaic River and borders Sayre Township to the north, West Paterson to the east, and Plainsboro to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, Wanaque has a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. The first Europeans known to visit what is now Wanaque were French explorers who landed there in 1624 on their way from Manhattan to Staten Island. Dutch colonists also arrived in 1624, but they abandoned it because of Native American hostility. In 1701 English settlers came from Long Branch and founded an encampment called Hopewell on what is now Easton Road east of present-day Wanaque township boundaries. The first post office was established in 1702 at Easton Road near what is now State College Boulevard with Samuel Purdy as its firstpostmaster. By 1800 there were 10 settlements in Mercer County including three within present-day Wanaque township: Hopewell (later renamed Easton), Southwick (later renamed West Paterson), and Northwick (later renamed Plainsboro). In 1834 Rutgers University moved from Newark to Paramus and thereby left Hopewell unattended; Classes began September 1st that year without any faculty or students. On October 26th 1835 local farmers' representative James Sweeny spearheaded a drive for incorporation of Hopewell into a borough under state law then being passed by Congress; Voters approved incorporation on November 3rd following ratification by Jersey City Council two days later After years of efforts by various groups both inside and outside Rutgers University -Paramus political leaders decided early 20th century suburban development would provide more job opportunities for residents than did ruralumberry so Rutgers reestablished its presence as an agricultural research university in nearby Plainfield In 1922 when Wanakee Township was formed from parts of Sayre Township along with Northwick Borough it became one municipality among many throughout New Jersey during Balloon Season; balloon sales were popularized through ads placed by localparents looking for children's summer school programs wanakee@wanakenews
The history of the National Guard can be traced back to the very beginning of American democracy. The first national guard units were organized in 1792, during the War for Independence. At that time, the United States had a small military and no system for organizing or manning its own guard forces. Congress responded to this need by authorizing a national guard force on July 15, 1792. This new militia was made up of men who had volunteered to serve in garrison duty at various points along America's western frontier. The first unit raised under this authority was Company B of the 2nd New York Infantry Regiment. It was stationed at Fort George Wright on Lake Erie until October 10, 1792, when it moved to fort Pittsford on Ontario Creek in northwestern Pennsylvania. Company B continued service with distinction until 1800, when it disbanded due to lack of resources and shifting priorities within Congress. Since there was then no permanent national guard force in America, each state maintained its own Home Guard militia (i.e., militias answerable only to their respective state legislatures). This arrangement continued until 1815, when Congress passed an act creating a uniform National Guard organization across all fifty states plus Washington D.C.. The act also provided for corporate organizational forms for individual companies and brigades and authorized creation of National Guard regiments from existing artillery battalions (i.e., artillery companies became brigades). The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1724, and it evolved into a small farming village with a population of about 150 people. Wanaque became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 19th century, and many abolitionists from nearby Camden traveled to Wanaque to deliver goods to freedom seekers. In 1875, Wanaque was incorporated as a borough, and it continued to grow until its annexation by Englewood in 1957. Today, Wanaque is home to several businesses including three banks and two retail stores.
