In 1714, the British took over control of North America and started Trading Post No. 2 on Long Island Sound. In 1718, they added Wanaque to their list of trading posts. The British also built a fort at this post which was known as Fort Christina. The British did not long survive in North America and were replaced by the French in 1755. France began an effort to expand its territory in North America and bought land from the English at various points throughout Canada and New England. In 1763, they founded Quebec City on Montreal’s outskirts and named it after Louis XIV, King of France (1643-1715). Quebec City became an important center for French culture during this time period because it had a large population of Huguenots who had fled religious persecution in Europe during the Protestant Reformation (1529-1600). In 1834, Wanaque was incorporated as a town within Middlesex County, NJ; however, it remained primarily a rural community until World War II when it began to experience significant growth due to its proximity to naval bases located at Elizabethtown Naval Air Station (now Elizabethtown Municipal Airport) and Wall Township Naval Air Station (now Wall Township Municipal Airport). During World War II there was significant demand for military supplies brought into New Jersey by sea from American troops stationed overseas including those serving at Elizabethtown Naval Air Station and Wall Township Naval Air Station; these supplies helped contribute to general war production efforts across all sectors of New Jersey. He soon became an accomplished fisherman and developed a reputation for excellence in the seafood trade. In 1875, he started exporting his products to Europe and Asia. By 1911, Mr. Beers had moved his business to its present location on the west bank of the Raritan River. With a fleet of over 100 vessels,Mr. Beers was one of the leading merchants in New Jersey during this time period.
Wanaque is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 9,854. Wanaque was formed on February 15, 1877 from part of Rahway Township. The present-day name is based on the Wanaqua Creek which flows through it. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Wanaque were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664 and 1665. French colonists also came to what is now Wanaque in the early 17th century. In 1727, a group of Swedes landed at Kearny Point and explored what is now southeastern Middlesex County before leaving for New York. A few years later, a group of Germans also set up shop near where Rahway Boulevard and Route 22 intersect today. Eventually, English settlers began arriving in large numbers and by 1821 had founded a small village called West New Brunswick on land that once belonged to Rahway Township (now part of East North Brunswick). On February 15, 1877, Wanaque was formed as a result of this merger when parts of Rahway Township and South River Township were combined into one township. At that time only about 100 people lived in Wanaque; however its growth continued rapidly over the next decade as more and more immigrants arrived from southern Canada and Europe. By 1923 all but 10 residents were Polish Americans while just two residents were Irish American; by 1954 all residents were either European or Americanized descendants of European immigrants who had settled here during the mid-19th century. In 1951 neighboring Rahway Borough became an independent municipality due to lack of local support for becoming part of another municipality – though not without some protest from those within Wanaques borders who felt they had been taken advantage of byRahwayslarger neighboringspecialty stores being built within their boundaries while they struggled to keep up with increased social welfare costs mandated by state government planners looking at how best to serve inner-city residentry needs when budgets became increasingly tight across all municipalities throughout New Jersey during the late 1940s through early 1950s’ (Moses et al., 2011).
