The Coast Guard has been in Wanaque, New Jersey since 1912. The first documented coast guard activity in the area came about on December 12, 1892 when a group of fishermen reported seeing a shipwreck off the coast. A small company was created to help with the search for the lost vessel and it is believed that this company may have been the first Coast Guard station in New Jersey. In 1916, The Coast Guard purchased land at Point Breeze which served as their main headquarters until they moved to their current location on Ocean Avenue in 1948. It is interesting to note that this same year saw the creation of the Wanaque Volunteer Fire Department which was also housed at Point Breeze until 1959 when they relocated to their present location on Broad Street. It wasn’t until 1978 that Wanaque became home to its own Coast Guard Station which was later renamed after former Commander John Fenton who died in 1988. This station helped support many missions such as Search and Rescue operations and law enforcement functions. In 1992, another station was added to support maritime patrols along shorelines throughout New Jersey including one near Atlantic City. Today, there are six active duty stations located within Wanaque Township including two Fort Dix stations and four Seaside Heights stations as well as our new Lighthouse Annex located just outside of town on Long Beach Boulevard. Additionally, we have several auxiliary stations scattered throughout Essex County providing coverage should an emergency arise anywhere within our borders!

Wanaque is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,024 at the 2010 census. Wanaque was founded in 1831 by Dutch settlers as part of the Moravian colony of North America. It was renamed after the city of Wanakenya in South Africa when that country became a British colony in 1948. The borough is located on the eastern edge of Mercer County and is bordered to the north by Wanakenya Township, to the east by Sussex Borough, and to the south by Easton Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, Wanaque has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 6,898 people resident in Wanaque Borough (or 14% of its population). Of these residents: 27% were male and 72% were female; 25% were white (non-Hispanic), 22% black or African American, 3% Asian/Pacific Islander, 17% Hispanic or Latino (of any race), and 2% two or more races combined; 5% were Native American or Alaska Native; 19%, 20–34 years old: 28%, 35–44 years old: 36%, 45–54 years old: 33%, 55+ years old: 8%. There are no schools within our boundaries so children attend public schools outside our borough borders which include nearby Westwood High School as well as Paramus Catholic High School system which students can also walk to from their homes within our borders

Wanaque, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,674 at the 2010 census. Wanaque is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area and is located on the southern border of Newark. The area now comprising Wanaque was first settled by English colonists in 1682 as West Hackensack Township. It was renamed East Hackensack Township in 1834 afterhackensacks (a Native American tribe) who had earlier dwelt in that part of Middlesex County. On October 14, 1855, a portion of Township 8 north of Monmouth Avenue became part of Wanaque when it was annexed by the city of Newark. Wanaque has a long history as an agricultural community with crops such as corn, beans, soybeans and oats being grown for subsistence and export throughout much of its history. In 1906, Wanaque became one of only two towns in New Jersey to be founded on landfill sites specifically designated for this purpose; other towns were Bound Brook and Paterson. In 1964, Wanaque residents voted to establish themselves as their own municipality within the larger city limits; this referendum passed with 64% support despite protests from Mayor John Lindsay who felt that city services should be provided to both municipalities equally. The merger took place on April 1st 1965 and resulted in a population increase from 2,527 to 3,674 over the subsequent few years – making it one of the most thinly populated cities in New Jersey at that time. In recent years there have been several large developments taking place within or adjacent to Wanaque; these include: Bally's Crossroads Shopping Center which opened up next door to the old Armoury grocery store on Edison Place in 2001; Prudential Newark Liberty Financial Tower which houses Quinnipiac University’s School of Business & Economics; Crowne Plaza Garden State Parkway which connects Route 9N with I-95/Route 66 eastbound near Exit 5A; Park Ridge Estates development just across Route 9 from I-95/Route 66 median where homes are available for sale starting at $225 thousand dollars per acre (the median property values have since increased significantly)); and lastly World Trade Center redevelopment planning which is expected to begin early 2019 and entail demolition or enlargement of numerous iconic WTC structures including 2 Spirit Row towers (now known as One Twin Towers), Freedom Tower North tower (now known as South Tower), 790 Third Avenue building (formerly called 7World Trade Center) and many others ....
Wanaque was founded in 1798 by George Washington, the first U.S. president. The town became an important junction of the New Jersey Railway and later became a center for agriculture. Wanaque was destroyed by a fire in 1845, but again regained its importance as a commercial and industrial center during the 19th century.
