Wallington is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,154 at the 2010 census. Wallington is home to the Mall of America and the Wallington Library and Museum. The first Europeans to explore what is now Hunterdon County were French traders who encountered Native Americans on the Susquehanna River in 1609. The area that is now Wallington was part of Monmouth Township until 1836 when it became part of Hunterdon County. The first European settler in present-day Wallington was Elijah White who arrived in 1784 from Philadelphia. He built a farm on what is now Route 34 near where Route 22 intersects with Military Road. After White's death, his son George built a house on what are now Main Street and Spring Hill Avenue. George's daughter Sarah (born 1789) married John Fenton (1759–1825), an opponent of the British Crown during the Revolutionary War who eventually became an assistant postmaster general under Ulysses S. Grant (1804–1865). His descendants continue to live in present day Wallington today as members of the Fenton family. In 1866, developers sold land adjacent to what are now Broadway and Spring Hill avenues for $2 per acre which led to construction of Madison Square Garden—the first indoor arena in North America—and other commercial enterprises around this time including aJoiners Shop & Brokerage location on Broadway between SpringHill and Walnut Avenues which still survives today as One Madison Square Garden South LLC., one of only two remaining employers from that era still operational within Midtown Manhattan.—School District No 2 established by Act No 90-542 situated east side along Broadway between State Street & Walnut Avenues early 1800’s also continues operations there today under new name “Walden School District”
