Wallington is a small, rural town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. The town was originally named Wallingford and was founded in 1795 by Samuel Wallington. Wallington is located on the border of Middlesex and Essex Counties. The first Europeans to visit Wallington were French traders in 1795. In 1803, the Township of WallINGTON (now part of West Side) was formed from parts of what are now Middlesex and Essex Counties. In 1810, Ulysses S. Grant built a three-story log cabin on the current site of town hall as his summer home. In 1865, Edward Everett Hale bought land in what is now northwest corner of town for $2 per acre (the price then exceeded $100 per acre). He began to build a house there that would later become known as Hale Hall. The first floor of Hale Hall became the first courthouse in New Jersey when it opened in 1870; it remained operational until 1945 when it was replaced by the present courthouse building that stands today on Third Street across from Union High School. In 1886–87, George Washington Carver established an agricultural research station near what is now town square; this helped lay the foundation for much future development withinWallington center including main shopping streets such as Clinton Avenue and Market Street which Today still carry his name! In 1907–08 John Witherspoon organized a “Great American Exhibition” at Princeton University with funds provided by wealthy Americans to promote American culture abroad; many products made during that period were displayed here including some wallpapers created here! One product displayed here was an artificial turf field called Rutgers Oval which still exists today just outside town limits! After World War I ended with Armistice Day 1918 surrounded by darkness some plants began to grow back after being killed during World War I while others did not begin to grow until years later due to lack of rainfall!! This led to farmers needing help getting their crops into marketable condition so they could sell them!! On October 14th 1928 – over 50 years ago – Wallington welcomed its newest resident when Philo Tilton moved into one of Philo's old farmhouses on Main Street !! What started out as a short stay grew into one full timeresidente !! Further annexation took place starting February 1st 1957 with all but 2 houses from original First Ward being annexed into newly created Second Ward!!! Wallington is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark– Passaic Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wallington was formed on May 3, 1872 from portions of Rahway and Highbridge Township. The first European settlers in what would become Wallington were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. The area that would later be called Wallington was first settled by Germans in 1740 as part of the Moravian Colony. By 1800, most of what is now Wallington had been taken over by English settlers and it remained a township until 1872 when it became a borough due to its location on the border of two municipalities - Newark and Passaic - both with large populations and lots for development. development took many forms during the early years ofWallington’s existence; including but not limited to: farming, milling and manufacturing. In addition to these traditional industries, there also developed anotech industry which produced clock radios and other electronic equipment during the mid-20th century. Over time however some businesses have closed down or relocated their operations while others have thrived such as KFC which has been located in Wallington since 1978 and continues to serve up delicious chickenuggets today despite protests by locals who allege that they are hurting local business climate by locating too close to Edison Elementary School which houses one of New Jersey's largest schools (KFC also operates two convenience stores within walking distance of school). Today there are numerous small businesses dotting the wallinton landscape catering to all sorts of needs such as beauty salons, pet groomers, cafes etc., givingwallINGTON a unique flavor unlike any other community in NJ
Wallington was first settled in 1785 by Welshmen and Englishmen. The area became known as Wallington Township, New Jersey, after the township was formed from a section of Middlesex County. In 1834, Wallington Borough was established and in 1860, it absorbed neighboring Paramus Township. In 1916, the borough was renamed Hunterdon Borough and in 1970 it merged with Union City to form Hunterdon-Union Township.
