Wallington is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality in Hunterdon County by area. Wallington was founded by English colonists in 1732 as a part of the Monmouthshire Township system. The township's first settlers were Huguenots who had fled France during the French Revolution. The community initially consisted of only a few homes and was not incorporated until 1802. In 1835, Wallington became the seat of Hunterdon County when it was formed from parts of Middlesex and Union counties. As an agricultural township, Wallington supported several large-scale agriculture projects such as the construction of the Delaware & Monmouth canal and development of larger farms around its core city center which still functions as an agricultural district today. In 1972, Wallington merged with nearby Hightstown to form one municipality known as "Wallington-Hightstown." This merger coincided withHunterdon County's efforts to consolidate its various municipalities into one entity so that services would be more efficient and effective for residents. Additionally, this consolidation allowed for increased manpower resources to be devoted to serving multiple municipalities instead of just one which could potentially become too complex or burdensome for residents to manage successfully. Today, Wallington remains an agricultural town with a significant commercial sector that continues to rely on its core city center for economic growth and vitality; however, recent trends suggest that some aspects of these businesses may have begun to decline due to competition from neighboring townships or other communities within Hunterdon County that have seen faster growth over the last few decades. Wallington is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,972 at the 2010 census. Wallington is one of five municipalities in Middlesex County that are part of the Camden-Haddon Heights-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area and its GDP has grown by 20% since 2000. The first Europeans to visit Wallington were Dutch traders who passed through in 1664 on their way to buy salt from the Lenape Indians. In 1719, the British military expedition under General John Burgoyne crossed the Delaware River and passed through Wallington on their way southward. They named it Westfield because they found an oasis thereabouts. In 1780, when George Washington became president of the United States, he called upon his generals to march against Great Britain across America's "Southern Frontier." They marched downriver from Philadelphia to Westfield but failed to take Yorktown (now Yorktown Heights). Washington then turned back upstream and arrived at Wallington on January 14th 1781 after a journey of over 100 miles (160 km). He spent three days here before setting off again for Yorktown. George Washington also stayed here during his inauguration ceremonies on February 12th 1789 which took place at Westminster Hall in what is now Independence Mall in Philadelphia. In 1814, as part of efforts by Major General Andrew Johnson to reduce Ulysses S. Grant's army between Fort Donelson and Nashville two weeks later, Wallington residents set fire to several hundred white men who had been interned there while Clinton's forces held Knoxville; this event is generally regarded as one of the worst acts of violence against civilians in American history up until that time. After this event many people left for smaller towns due to racial tension around that time period
Wallington was founded in 1781 by Captain John Wallington and his wife, Susannah. It became a borough in 1847. In 1903, Wallington had a population of 1,500 people. In the late 1800s, Wallington was known for its cheese production. The town also produced apples and other vegetables.
