Wallington is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. The town was named for General John Wallingford, who fought in the American Revolution and served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army. Wallington was founded on April 15, 1795 by Captain George Rogers Jr., an officer of the British army who had deserted during the American Revolution and returned to England to fight for King George III. In 1801, Wallington became part of Read's Ferry Township. In 1870, Wallington had a population of 438; it grew to 6,022 by 1900. In 1960, it had a population of 11,539; it grew to 14,844 by 2000. The median household income was $55,917 (in 2006). As of 2009-10 there were 12 schools in Wallington with over 1125 students K-12th grade: four elementary schools (grades pre-K through 2nd grade), three high schools (3rd – 8th grades), and one post-secondary school ( Essex County College). There are also two churches (Anglican and Methodist) and two daycare centers serving about 650 children each day from Pre-K through 5th grade. Wallington was originally settled by Germans in the late 1800s. The community's first post office opened in 1904, and it remained open until 1959. Wallington also developed a small shopping center that served the community until the early 1990s.
