The Coast Guard Squadron One was activated on December 6th, 1908 and consisted of a single boat- the SS San Francisco. The first gift from the Coast Guard was a life jacket. Buckley USN during his term as Commandant of the Coast Guard Station Atlantic City (1976-1978). It is now on display at NAS Patuxent River Naval Air Station Maryland. • Two Life Jackets (1958) - These life jackets were given to officers and enlisted men on board USS Alabama during its deployment to Haiti in 1958. It is now on display at NRAS Miami Beach Florida • A self-propelled buoy/weather station (1968) - This buoy/weather station was donated by Leonard D'Augereau USN in 1968 and is currently located off Seal Beach California. The Wallington Coast Guard Station was established on July 1, 1881. The station was located at the foot of Mount Holly in Wallington Township and became part of the New Jersey National Guard on February 17, 1942. It was re-designated as the Wallington Coast Guard Station on October 9, 1948. The coast guard station closed its doors on January 15, 1974.
Wallington is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. The name originated from Wallingford, England. The first Europeans to visit Wallington were Dutch traders in 1609. Wallington was founded by English settlers in 1724 as a small rural community on the border of Middlesex and Sussex counties. It grew rapidly during the 18th century because of its strategic location at the junction of two major routes: the Delaware and Monmouth Railroad and Route 22 (now Interstate 95). In 1795, George Washington visited Wallington while on his way to battle British forces at Trenton. Washington noted that "the place [was] very pretty," and recommended it for settlement by Americans. In 1800, General John Wool's force burned down part of the town center after being repulsed by local warriors; this event helped spur development in the area. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed at Fort Dix in neighboring Edison Township; many of them settled in Wallington after their discharge from military service. After Fort Dix closed its gates following World War II, many of these soldiers moved back into Edison Township but some continued to reside in Wallington until they relocated again during the late 1990s when Fort Dix reopened as an Army training ground. In 1951, acres surrounding what is now downtown Wallsboro were donated to create what is now called Eastern State Park Courtyard Mall which today anchors one end of Barnes & Noble programming mall located adjacent to I-95 exit 10A (New Brunswick Avenue), just east of Interstate 95 exit ramp #5B (Route 22). wallsinijohnson@aol.com
