The business passed through several hands before it came into the hands of Elias Howe in 1896. He added roasted beans to the menu and named it Elias Howe's Coffee House. In 1922, Howe sold the business to Harry Bendix who operated it until his death in 1939. After World War II, Ventnor City became an all-American city with its own coffee house chain - Bendix Coffee House - which lasted until 1978. The first Europeans to visit Ventnor were attracted by its natural resources and its strategic location as an important port on the southern end of New Jersey's moorland area. In 1674, Samuel Halliburton built a cabin on what is now Elmira Avenue in present-day Ventnor Township and named it after his birthplace, Nether Nuttall in England. The first European settlement in what is now Ventnor Township was established by colonists from London in 1714 as Garden District and included present-day Burlington Township and parts of Monmouthshire and Middlesex counties. On October 25, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, British General John Burgoyne surrendered at Dumontville after successful attacks against British forces at Saratoga Springs and Trenton. George Washington's forces landed near Vintner on December 12th during the Battle of Princeton where they suffered heavy losses including Burgoyne who escaped with few injuries thanks to his horse Artemus (now known as Mount Airy). After America became independent from Great Britain in 1776, settlers began moving into what is now Ventnor City from all over New Jersey because of the new nation's growing wealth and opportunity. The town was founded on May 25th, 1800 by George Stephenson with 1 capita acres (0 km²) – far less than even today’s sprawling suburbs but enough to make a small impact on the local economy. One early settler described Ventnor City as “a little village with about fifty houses” which quickly grew into one of North America’s most vibrant cities with over 100 businesses catering to residents within just five years of its founding! By 1831 there were more than 300 businesses operating within 10 blocks of each other! Ventnor City is an incorporated city in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. Ventnor City was founded on December 12th, 1868 by Job and Margaret Gardner and was named for the Ventnor Brook that flows through the town. The first settler in Ventnor City was Job Gardner who arrived with his family on December 12th 1868 from VT (now Vermont). He built a log cabin and called it "Gardner's Landing". The first school in Ventnor City was opened in 1870 by Mrs. Lavinia Cushing. In 1872 a sawmill started up and soon there were three mills in operation: one operated by Elisha Sibley & Sons; one by John Prentice & Bros.; and one by George Hahneman & Sons. In 1875, the Post Office moved to Ventnor City from Newark which at that time had a population of over 120,000 people! It didn't take long for businesses to start up withinventor city limits- within a few years there were 5 stores/cafés, 2 churches (one small), 1 school (grades 1-12), 3 hotels/motels, 1 theater(the old Grosvenor Theatre), 2 machine shops(1 operated by Messrs. Burt & Warburg) as well as 3 agricultural buildings including a flour mill(operated by Hahneman Brothers). In 1886 the Edison Electric Light Company established their headquarters here before moving westward across America to Chicago where they remain to this day! By 1898 ventNOR CITY had become an incorporated village! In 1916–1917 both World Wars caused many losses for our economy with many factories closed down during those years but we bounced back quickly with new companies starting up such as JB Welding Co., Canoe Manufacturing Company (later renamed canoecrafts Inc.), Wagon Wheel Tool Works etc… In 1957 we became Borough of VentnorCity when Essex County merged into New Jersey! In recent years much progress has been made technological wise with several high tech companies having their headquarters here such as Bloomberg LNG Partners LP - operations now based out of Englewood Cliffs NJ – SAP AG - German software giant - Verizon Wireless - among others! But much more has still to come- like home ownership according to Census Data reported in 2018 only 11% of residents lived in homes rented or owned outright while 83% resided either rent or own their home outright!!!
