Ventnor City is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Plymouth Township Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ventnor City ZIP code (08816) includes all of Ventnor and parts of Northampton Township and Easton Township. The community was founded by English colonists in 1724 and named for Ralph Neville, 5th Earl of Sandwich. In 1847, a post office called Ventnor was established in the town center by Order of the Garter members John Ewing and General James Wilkinson. The first postmaster, Peter Fenton, served from December 17, 1847 to October 1, 1848. In 1850, Samuel Morse set up his telegraph line between Camden and New York City via Ventnorville. This made Ventnor an important junction for early American communication system builders. On July 10, 1870, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldier Stephen Watts raided aUnion military camp near present day Mount Olivet Cemetery killing 12 soldiers and wounding more than 60 others; this event is known as Watts' Raid or Battle of Mount Olivet Cemetery. On November 6th 1870 during Reconstruction period following the warventornor organized an agricultural fair which attracted many businesspeople from neighboring towns such as Easton Township who helped to revive local economy after being destroyed by war devastation combined with general economic depression caused by civil unrest caused by efforts to reintegrate former Confederates into society rather than be looked down upon as criminals or failures like those they had fought against. One result of this effort was that some businesses reopened that were closed during the war while others failed due to lack of customers or competition from new arrivals on the scene such as Northampton Township which had become much more prosperous since it regained its status as an independent municipality in 1902 after leaving Union County following Confederation Calendar changes affecting areas including Monmouth County which bordered Camden Station territory northward).
