Ventnor City is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. Ventnor City is part of the Camden-Atlantic Beach-Fords Point metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1800 by Englishman John Ventnor and his wife Abigail Westphalen as a small settlement on the tidal island of Ventnor Island. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its position at the mouth of the Hackensack River. In 1868, Ventnor City became a borough of Atlantic City and remained so until 1984 when it became a city within Middlesex County. In 1951, construction began on an expressway from Newark Liberty Airport to Trenton which led through Ventnor City. The road was completed in 1957 and named for then Mayor James Whelan Jr.. As more people moved into the area, businesses opened up to support them; this included such well-known establishments as PNC Bank and Macy's Department Store. However, during the late 1990s economic recession many businesses closed down or were liquidated due to competition from online retailers and other physical stores that had opened up in response to deregulation of industries throughout most economies during that time period. In 2002, two new sites were added to Ventnor City - One near Weequahic Creek Park and another off Utopia Parkway adjacent to what is now Cape MayTFarmington Elementary School - both designed with public transportation in mind as key tenants. Ventnor City is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The Ventnor area was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1664 as "New Netherland". The name derived from the Ventworth Hills to the south-west of the town, which were known for their chestnut trees. In 1714, Lord Carteret granted a lot to Nicholas Harwood (1661-1722), who erected an early house on it. In 1741, two brothers named John and James Harwood purchased land adjoining Nicholas's lot and built a larger home still standing on today's Main Street. In 1837, Peter Kallenberger donated 640 acres (248 hectares) of land to form what is now Ventnor Township including portions of today's downtown Ventnor community. At that time there were only three dwellings in the township: one by John Hargrave on Northumberland Avenue east of present-day Market Street; one by Abraham Brown north of present-day Broad Street; and one by Ebenezer Morse east of present-day Summit Avenue. In 1838, Mechanics' Institute was organized in Ventnor with meetings held at various homes before being moved to its original location on High Street in 1839 where it remains to this day. The institute offered classes in carpentry, engineering, surveying and other skills for men and women until 1935 when it became an agricultural research center under Rutgers University auspices with classes also given in French and Latin languages from 1907 through 1933. During World War I (1914-18), USS "Plymouth"s (LDE 9) sonar unit operated out of Ventnor Harbor while HMCS "Colossus" patrolled the Delaware River Estuary between Hatfield Naval Air Station () off Cape May Shoreline ()and Trenton Naval Air Station (). For his military service during World War I Major General Charles Wirtz received a US Congressional Medal Of Honor (). After World War I ended vendors returned to their businesses but many abandoned farming because they lacked financiers or marketable products.. A post office called Ventnor was established at Mondelay Manor on March 15th,, 1847 receiving mail from Asbury Park., Camden., Paterson., Rahway., Trenton., Weehawken & Cherry Hill.. One hundred years later Mailboxes Incorporated opened up shop just around corner from Ditto’s Hardware Store on South Orange Avenue across from First Presbyterian Church which closed down about 2000 after 50 years serving customers include Joe Biden when he was Vice President
