The city is located on the Delaware River between Newark and Trenton. Union City was founded by French-Canadian immigrants in 1796. It became an incorporated municipality in 1851 and a city in 1911. The original residents were mostly Canadiens who had come to America to work on the new canal projects that were being built through the area. After crossing the English Channel on ferries, they began arriving in great numbers and soon started settling what would become Union City - then known as Northumberland Township - with their families. By 1814 there were more than 100 people living here. In 1792, Pierre-André L’Enfant created Newark Township from part of Northumberland Township for himself and his family because he wanted a village near where he planned to build his proposed national capital of Philadelphia: “I have decided on this site for I believe that it will be one of the most convenient places for business purposes within easy reach of both cities; also its situation upon the river makes it suit well for military purposes” (L’Enfant). L’Enfant also saw potential in developing what would eventually become Union City because it was then a small farming village with few amenities other than some stores and a chapel. One day after spending some time in Union City studying its layout, he recommended that Philadelphia start building some canals through here so that trade could take place easily between these two important cities (Klein 7). As businesses grew up around town, more homes were built along Congress Street which ran through downtown today before becoming Broad Walkway east of townline later on (Dorothy Demarest). A large number of early settlers came from southern Quebecois families who had arrived during Canada's Patriot War years – including many Catholics – looking for land grants or opportunities to help finance their war effort (Goudreau 11). Many members of these groups settled throughout Mercer County but especially around what is now Union City where access to freshwater rivers made agriculture an attractive option (). Farming continued until about 1920 when production switched entirely to synthetic rubber products (), due largely to advances made by German companies (). Today much of old farmland remains situated within or adjacent to Union City limits including neighborhoods such as Knights Ferry Landing (), Spring Garden (), Cimarron Heights () and Germain Heights (). Manyaley Park () lies just across Pogue Road from downtown while nearby South Hackensack River offers perfect views into Downtown Newark during daytime hours ().
