Union City, New Jersey (population: 84,635) is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 87,711 as of the 2010 Census. It is the second-largest city in Bergen County and one of the most populous cities in New Jersey. Union City's downtown is home to many high-rise buildings, such as One Liberty Plaza and Chrysler Building. The city also contains a large public park system and dozens of small businesses. The first Europeans to see Union City were Dutch sailors aboard the ship "Somerset" on July 8, 1664. They named it "Oudewatert" after their captain and his crewmen who had seen an island off the coast of what is now Staten Island when they sailed from Holland on that day. In 1736 Englishman Benjamin Hackett renamed it "New York". At that time much of what is now Bergen County was part of Pennsylvania Territory under British rule. On November 25, 1831 American Revolutionary War patriot General George Washington visited Union City while on his way to battle at Trenton against George Clinton's army; he stopped at Constitution Hall for dinner before continuing his journey westward. On December 12th 1831 Hessians under Colonel Johann Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz burned down a warehouse near present day Pennsauken Avenue and Third Street during their retreat from Princeton after Battle of Princeton on December 11th 1801; this event helped start the fire which destroyed much of what is now downtown Union City in 1834 during an uncontrolled blaze started by a drunken man working inside a store next door to where today's First Presbyterian Church stands (the old building still stands). In 1840 John Ayer founded Ayer Paper Company with paper made from forest pulp imported from Canada by boatload from New Brunswick; Ayer Paper soon became one of America's largest paper companies and served local customers throughout North America including England until its bankruptcy in 1922 due largely to environmental damage caused by World War I insurgency against German occupation forces in northeastern New Jersey . Union City was first settled in 1795 by Dutchmen and their families. The area now includes the University of New Jersey campuses of Newark, Camden, and plot on the border of Union City and Paterson. The city was a stop on the Underground Railroad as many slaves were brought here to freedom. In 1846, Union City became the capital of New Jersey after it was moved from Trenton. It remained as such until 1959 when New York took over that role. The city’s history is intertwined with that of Rutgers University, which has its origins in Union City (then called North Brunswick). On July 1, 1831, Rutgers Rezoning Act granted university status to what was then simply North Brunswick Township (now part of Middlesex County). Rutgers students had already been studying in nearby Newark since 1664 when John Jansen founded Old Queen’s College there. When North Brunswick Township split off from Burlington County to form its own government in 1795, Rutgers students continued to study at Newark Castle even though they were technically living in Burlington County. In 1907, when South Orange Township separate from Morris County and became an independent municipality, South Orange High School also joined Rutgers as a school district under state law. In 1927 Princeton-educated Minister Louis Sweet donated land east of Princeton Avenue for use as a new campus for Rutgers; this site is now known as Livingston Avenue Campus. Delaware Park across From campus served as a playground/ Recreational ground for local boys until 1962 when it was closed due to pollution problems created by high levels of lead racetracks located just across US-1 near our present day campus boundaries! Newark Mayor Willard “Willie” La Guardia spearheaded efforts to clean up the park while stillserving as Rector at Rutgers; this event helped increase public awareness about environmental issues which would eventually lead to NJ Governor Raymond Frank signing legislation authorizing constructionof Oneida Lake State Park adjacentto Campus
Union City was founded in 1824 by Dutch immigrants. It became a city on July 1, 1874, when the state of New Jersey merged with the city of Jersey City. In 1927, Union City became home to the first nuclear power plant in the United States. The plant operated until it was shut down in 1987. In 1984, Union City was chosen as one of five cities to be served by the new PATH system.
