Trenton, New Jersey is a city in the United States. It is the county seat of Mercer County and has a population of over 150,000. Trenton was founded in 1814 as an agricultural village on the east bank of the Delaware River by English settlers who named it after Lord Trent. The city was renamed Trenton in 1847 after Colonel George Washington, who had represented Mercer County in Congress. In 1792, the state of New Jersey created Mercer County from portions of Middlesex and Sussex counties to serve as a rural district for Trenton. The first courthouse in Trenton was built at what is now known as Market Square. The original courthouse burned down in 1818, but a new courthouse was built and opened in 1821. The first mayor of Trenton was John Fenton and the first treasurer was Joshua Greenough. In 1876, Trenton became part of the newly formed Municipal League which promoted local self-government through regulation of industry and commerce. One result of this effort was that manufacturers moved their businesses to other cities such as Newark and Camden while also creating industries such as brewing beer, garment production, paper manufacturing, meatpacking/butchering products, shoe manufacture and other light industrial enterprises that have continued into our present day economy. In 1925–1926 Governor James Kavanagh recommended that Philadelphia be made its regional center due to its advantages as an educational institutions (Pennsylvania State University (PSU), Philadelphia’s largest employer) and political powerbase; however Philadelphia refused to give up its dominance over East Coast banking interests which caused some friction between Philly’s “new class” politicians (the leadership from Penn State) and older merchants who felt they were being taken advantage of by Philly's powerful economic sector
