Totowa, New Jersey is a small town in northern Hunterdon County, New Jersey on the Susquehanna River. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Totowa was founded in 1784 by Loyalist colonists who left Fort Duquesne after the French and Indian War. It became an incorporated municipality in 1834. The name "Totowa" is derived from the Lenape word "totonah", meaning "place where deer are found." The original settlers called the place "Horseshoe Bend". In 1835, they changed it to "Totowa Township", because that is what it currently stands as. The township was formed when portions of Hunterdon and Passaic Counties were annexed by New York City. The first settler in Totowa Township was Elijah Armstrong, who arrived there in 1784 with his family. He built a cabin near present-day Main Street and Paterson Road. In 1785, he married Rebecca Hardenbrook and settled down in what is now Totowa Township with their four children: Samuel (1785-1859), Mary (1787-1875), Ezekiel (1789-1865) and Sarah (1792-1855). In 1834, Totowa Township became an incorporated municipality under the name of “New Hanover Township” because all of Mercer County had been detached from New York State as part of the Compromise of 1850 which ended the American Civil War. At that time, many people living east of Route 20 new to America moved into this area along with their families during these difficult days before annexation into New Jersey by Great Britain following its victory over southern United States at Saratoga Springs on September 11th,. Many businesses opened up around this time including Elisha Aiken's sawmill on present day Main Street which still operates today! Many residents here followed Governor Andrew Johnson’s decision to end Reconstruction following federal troops’ withdrawal from South Carolina on April 9th 1865 due to increasing violence within post facto black areas across the state caused by white supremacists known as Confederate Secretaries General such as John Cordon & James Hargrave! For many years after Reconstruction ended until well into World War II most residents here kept mostly to themselves since there were few opportunities for economic development outside of farming or manufacturing! However things have begun to change slowly over recent decades with some small businesses starting up mixed trades such as home health aides etc... One thing that has not changed however are attitudes towards ethnic/racial diversity especially among younger generations who tend to be more accepting than their parents or grandparents! While some crime rates have increased recently due to drugs being smuggled through local roads onto Interstate 95 just north of town many people involved with Rotary Club programs have helped reduce crime overall while also keeping young people engaged through arts and culture !!

Totowa was founded in 1795 by settlers from New York. The town became a borough in 1868 and was taken over by Paterson in 1975. Totowa is located on the Delaware River, about 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia. The population of Totowa was 8,257 at the 2010 census. Founded as a small village on the banks of the Delaware River, Totowa grew rapidly during the early 1800s for two main reasons: its location – just upstream from then-upcoming Philadelphia – and its access to navigable waterways. By 1814, Totowa had organized itself into a town and began to attract businesses and residents with its availability for shipping products downstream from Philadelphia. In 1825, however, whenPhiladelphia constructed the first locks on the Delaware River to control navigation upstream, Totowans decided they didn't need another community just upstream; they incorporated as a borough and built theirown lock system! Boroughhood status only lasted until 1968 when it was taken over by Paterson due to fewer regulations governing municipal government within county boundaries (the new municipality's boundaries lay farther east). In 1975, following years of consolidation among Pennsylvania municipalities (due in large part to pressure from neighboring counties), Totowa merged with both Camden County and Burlington Township (to form one consolidated municipality) under Mayor Leonard Weinreb’s leadership. Since coming under Weinreb’s management, Totowa has experienced several phases of growth: A rapid increase in population after World War II; suburbanization during the 1960s/70s which led to more jobs available within city limits; an aggressive marketing campaign led by Mayor Weinreb towards revitalization beginning in the mid-1990s that helped bring increased development downtown including high-rise buildings; culminating with today’s renaissance seen through initiatives such as bike lanes and arts programming
Totowa was founded in 1795 by the Dutch. The town was originally named "Willemstad" after Willem de Vries, a captain in the Dutch East Indies Company. In 1834, it was renamed Totowa Township after Major General John H. Totowa, who served as military governor of New Jersey from 1832 to 1835. On July 1, 1876, the township became an incorporated municipality and retains this name to this day.
