The Totowa Police Department was established on October 1, 1875 and currently has 11 officers. In 1886, the department adopted a blue and white badge as part of its uniform. The department's first major purchase came in 1904 when they purchased the Taurus patrol car which served until 1978. Since then, the department has made many purchases including an SUV in 2009 and a K9 unit in 2014. In 2017, the Totowa Police Department underwent a $50 million investment that will improve their operations and equipment such as new body cameras and radios. Additionally, additional funding will also be given to fund job training for officers and support staff.

Totowa is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. Totowa was founded in 1780 by Joshua Heald and his wife Sarah Caldwell and grew rapidly thanks to its location on the Passaic River. It became a borough in 1849 and then a city in 1912. The name of the town comes from an early settler's name, "Totowa", which means "a place where there is water." Totowa has been known for its cheese industry since the early 1800s. In 1924, it merged with neighboring Parsippany to form what is now called Parsippany-Totowa Township.
Totowa was founded in 1764 by Dutch settlers who named it for the Totowa Brook that ran through the town. The first post office was established in 1785 and the first store opened in 1807. The town rapidly grew and by 1820 it had a population of over 100 people.
