There is no doubt that the military has been a big part of Totowa since its founding. The town was founded by Dutch settlers in 1795 and quickly became an important center for the militia and local defense. In 1812, Totowa was incorporated as a borough, and it remained an important community until the end of World War II. The first military deployment to Totowa took place on November 10, 1861 when Union troops were sent to support American forces during the American Civil War. The army garrisoned at Fort George near present-day Totowa for several months before being withdrawn in late December 1861. After the war, Totowa continued to serve as a garrison town with a limited role in civilian life. However, after World War II began there was an enormous influx of soldiers and their families who made up the bulk of the population growth during this time period. This change led to increased demand for services from businesses and individuals alike which had a significant impact on local economy. As more people joined the military there was also an increase in gifts given to members of service organizations such as unit insignia, medals, hats or clothing etc., as well as items such as weaponry or vehicles. Gifts have often been sentimental or commemorative in nature and can be seen as a way to show appreciation for service rendered. Totowa is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden- hooked area and is located on the banks of the Pennington River. Totowa's nickname "The Smokestack" comes from its high concentration of smokestacks used for manufacturing goods during the early 1800s. In 1831, John Smeaton built a mill on the riverbank which became known as Smeaton's Mill. In 1856, Seth Lowry erected a sawmill and gristmill on the same site which became known as Lowry's Mills. The first post office in Totowa was established in 1871. By 1897, there were ten businesses in Totowa with a population of over 1,000 people. During World War I, Totowa served as an airfields for both American and British forces. After hostilities ended, Totowanians enjoyed their time off until 1921 when they returned to their day-to-day lives as busy citizens once again! In 1951, totowans founded their own hospital - First Presbyterian Hospital - making it one of only two hospitals in Camden County that were not operated by county government! In 1982, First Presbyterian Hospital relocated to its current location across from City Hall in downtown Totowa and continues to serve the community today! Today Totowitza is home to many local businesses including restaurants such as Joe's Pizza (formerly called Pizzeria Giovanni), Dunkin' Donuts/Bakery & Coffee House (formerly called Dutch Bros.), Flanders Bakery (formerly known as Gilda’s), Morris Tavern and Pub (now called Morris' Tavern) as well as several churches including First Presbyterian Church and St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. With its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, Totowa offers residents plenty to enjoy whether shopping or simply spending time outdoors!

Totowa was an incorporated town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Wilmington, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Totowa Township was Abram Biddle on July 14, 1795. He and his family were the first white people to reside in this township. They built a log cabin on the east bank of the Passaic River and named it "Biddles Ferry". In 1824, Abram's son Solomon moved from Farmington to Totowa with his wife Hannah and their three children. The family soon had six more children: Mary (1825-1912), Abram (1827-1893), John(1829-1899), Sarah (1831-1900), Anna (1833-1914) and Charles Fenton(November 11th 1830 - May 5th 1906). In 1854, Morris Yerger became the first resident postmaster of Totowa Township after opening a post office on December 10th that year near what is now called Yerger's Ford Road/Route 901 north of where Interstate 95 meets Route 23. After serving for two years he resigned to take up a position as supervisor of public works for Hunterdon County which he did until 1861 when he joined the Union army during the American Civil War as a lieutenant colonel in Company K 2nd RegimentNJ Volunteer Infantry. Upon return home he resumed his job as postmaster but resigned again after only one year due to ill health so that he could spend more time with his family. After World War II ended, Totowa experienced strong growth as many veterans returned home and began anew businesses such as Sheet Metal Workers Local #202 who erected several buildings including a plant building which still stands today next to I-95 southbound exit 1A in what is now known as Easton Square mall; Auto Parts Warehouse; Rotary Club; Masonic Lodge #2176 etc.; Tilghman Paper Merchants Incorporated founded by Harry Tilghman who also started White Sands Paper Co.; First National Bank & Trust Company established 1916 later merged into BarclaysBank USA Incorporated; Youngstown Sheet Metal Works Ltd., also founded 1916 operating until 1978 then sold along with other assets to Bethlehem Steel Corporation ; finally there was Joe Biden's childhood home located next door across from Easton Square Mall being converted into apartments starting in 1984 until 1991 when it too closed down not long after becoming available for purchase . During World War II Totowa had several factories open such as: Sheet Metal Workers Local 202 erected several buildings including auto parts warehouse; Rotary Club; Masonic Lodge 2176 etc.; Youngstown Sheet Metal Works Ltd., also founded 1916 operating until 1978 then sold along with other assets to Bethlehem Steel Corporation
