Totowa is located on the Susquehanna River and within the New York City borough of Queens. The town was incorporated on February 14, 1868, from parts of Harrison Township and Clinton Township. It named after Captain John Totowa (1756-1827), a British explorer who explored much of what is now New Jersey in 1784-85. Since its incorporation, Totowa has undergone several name changes: Totowania (1868-1914), Totowana (1915-present), and finally Totowa Township (2018). The current name honors Captain John "Al" Totowa Jr., namesake of nearby Aliquippa Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census 2000, there were 7,711 people living in township who were 45 years or older. The population density was 1,478 inhabitants per square mile (524/km²). There were 3,847 housing units at an average density of 553 per square mile (246/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98% White; 0% African American; 2% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races.
