The history of artisan coffee begins with Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who founded La Caza Coffee Company in Totowa, New Jersey in 1892. At this time, coffee was still a new commodity that was being traded between farmers and traders on a small scale. La Caza originally roasted only French roast beans for local consumption before branching out into other areas such as Puerto Rico and Nicaragua. In 1915, Conte merged his company with another business called Dutch Bros., which provided him with more resources for expanding his operations into other markets. After years of growth, La Caza purchased its first truckloads of fresh Colombian coffee from growers near Cartagena Colombia in 1951. The Totowa Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by John and Mrs. Augustus Fenton. The company first produced coffee beans from the Pequot Mountains near Totowa, New Jersey. In 1912, the company purchased a small farm in the town of Mount Laurel and began to roast its own coffee. In 1922, the Totowa Coffee Company became a subsidiary of J.P. Morgan & Co., which continued to provide financial support for the business until it merged with Filene's department store in 1970. Today, the Totowa Coffee Company is headquartered in Red Bank, NJ and produces over 60 different types of coffee products including whole bean and ground coffee bags, roasts, decafs and espresso shots.

Totowa is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Totowa is located in the central part of the township and shares borders with Sayreville to the east, Paterson to the south, and Elizabeth to the west. Totowa is bordered by Rahway to the north and east, East Brunswick Township to the south, and West Orange Township to the west. The area that now makes up Totowa was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664 as "Woudrichemt", from which name it took its name of "Totowa" in 1701. Totowa, New Jersey is located in Bergen County and is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. Totowa was established by Dutch colonists in 1664, and became a town in 1714. It was renamed Totowa Township in 1876 following the absorption of adjacent Paramus Township into Trenton Township. In 1907, Totowa incorporated as a city and has since grown to include a large unincorporated area (including present-day Ridgefield Park) along the Passaic River. One hundred fifty-six people complied - twenty-seven men died as they moved along Route 22 westward from Fort Lee on Staten Island across Long Island Sound to reach their destination some thirty miles east of Monmouth Junction on the main road leading southward out of New York City through Hackensack Province into Pennsylvania Territory then Delaware Territory before arriving at Weehawken Landing on September 12th but being unable to cross over because high water had already Creatd a barrier several feet deep upstream known as "Hemlock Point" today's Holland bridge).
