Totowa is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,817 at the 2010 census. Totowa is bordered by Neptune Township to the north, Easton to the east, and Edison to the south. The township was formed from portions of Neptune and Easton townships on November 3, 1812. Totowa Township was named for Captain John Totowah (1651-1720), an American Revolutionary War veteran who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and as captain of a company in the British army during the Siege of Yorktown. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Totowa Township on September 17, 1693 when three Dutchmen founded Puttenhage Plantation on land that later became part of what is now Monmouth County. On December 12, 1696, Captains Cornelius van der Valk (1650-1702) and Hendrick de Graaf (1668-1734) bought 1/2 mile (1 km) of land opposite present-day Route 22 near present-day Sayreville from Chief Joseph Jacobs Jr.. In 1701 they erected a small cabin known as "The Fort". The first store opened in this location on October 15th, 1814 by Ira Dickson. On November 3rd 1812 Troupes & Co., merchants located at 2 Ferry Street built what would become their only store there until it burned down in 1903). NYSE: OTOTWO In 1815 Andrew Jarratt set up shop at 214 Main Street which he called "The Old Tavern". He operated this business until his death in 1825. Andrew's wife Sarah ran the business with him until her death about two years later; then it passed along to her son George Washington Jarratt who continued it under his father's guidance until 1862 when he sold it to Samuel Morse Sr..
