Tinton Falls was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It was founded in 1688 by Hugh Tinton and his family. The town grew rapidly during the eighteenth century, as people from throughout the region migrated to its facilities for agriculture, trade, and manufacturing. In 1784, Tinton Falls became a borough. In 1834, it became part of Uniontown Township. In 1868, it merged with nearby Riverdale to form the new city of Princeton. Tinton Falls is now a suburb of Princeton. The first settler in what is now Tinton Falls was Hugh Tintinham who arrived there in 1688 on horseback from London. He built himself a cabin on an island near the present day intersection of Main and Spring streets. Over time other settlers also arrived including Robert Marshall who built a house on High Street in 1705; John Smith who erected an addition to his home at Spring Street in 1711; Timothy Bostick who built a dwelling at the corner of Spring and Maple Streets in 1715; James Caldwell who erected an addition to his home at Maple Street in 1720; Nicholas Carew ( married Anna Maria Carew)who located land east ofpresent-day Middle Road between West Avenue and East Avenue ; John Beardsley ( married Sarah Beardsley)who located land northeast of present-day Market Street between North Avenue and South Avenue ; Anthony Goffe (married Elizabeth )who located land northwest of present-day Spring Street between Diamonds Lane and Dutch Lane ; Peter Stroud (married Sarah )who resided on current day Main Street between East Avenue and Maple Streets .
