Tenafly, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey on the southern shore of Long Island. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. Tenafly is part of the Trenton–Mercer City, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Tenafly was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he called it "Trento". In 1764, Nicholas Murray described it as follows: "In breadth and length it forms an extensive bay; its surface especialy rich with alluvium having been derived from many miles around the island...its termination is distant but not very great from that at which we arrive by water from Trenton." The first settler in what is now Tenafly was Captain John Schermerhorn who arrived there on April 12th, 1764. He named his land Schermerhorn's Bay after himself. The township was formed on December 11th, 1814 when parts of Mercer and Hudson Counties were combined to form a new government under the jurisdiction of the Township Committee. The current name originated with Captain John Schermerhorn when he set up shop in what is now known as North Park Avenue and First Street. At that time there were no streets or avenues and only a few houses scattered about along present day First Street and North Park Avenue. In 1852, started construction on what would become Main Street which ran parallel to what are currently First and Second Streets. That same year also saw the erection of two important buildings within today's limits - One being our current Administration Building located at East First Street while another - Colonial Tavern - still stands today across South Park Avenue from our Administration Building). On October 30th, 1892 Tenafly had its first election for school board which resulted in three members being elected out of groupings made up of residents of different villages within Mercer County (Milton Village; West Egg Harbor Village; Great NeckVillage) with voting taking place at various locations throughout township including one at each home where ballots were cast direct onto tables spread out among residents attending services organized by respective village committees (the Township Committee continuing until 1889). On November 7th following elections local trustees met again to vote upon resolutions passed by committee regarding building funds for new schools (the resolution authorizing $5 per month towards necessary expenses for such schools passing without objection) as well as matters such as trash removal etcetera making their way through village groups back into individual homes thenceforth becoming responsible for carrying out these plans themselves rather than depending upon Township coffers for funding/supportive actions thereby securing more personal control over their own affairs despite continued efforts by some trustees hereinto resist this demand by Village leaders seeking increased central authority & decision-making power over school operations). Tenafly was a small, rural community in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town and the only settlement remaining in Mercer County. The first settlers to Tenafly were two families from Scotland who came to America in 1824. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Monongahela River. In 1830, they sold their property to John Beasley, who moved his family to Tenafly in 1830-31. Beasley's son, Amos Beasley Jr., became one of the first storekeepers in Tenafly. He was also an early settler on what is now Second Street NW near where he lived until his death in 1892 . In 1827-28, George Washington Keyes settled nearby with his family and some slaves on a farm known as Delaware Manor . However, most of Keyes' descendants abandoned Delaware Manor after he died in 1829 . In 1840-41, David Westphal discovered coal seams under Tenafly Township and began mining for coal there. He leased land from Josephus Pennypacker for this purpose and organized a company known as Pennypacker & Westphal Coal Company . Soon afterwards other miners began arriving from Pennsylvania , Maryland , Ohio , and other states to mine coal under Pennypacker & Westphal Coal Company land grants . In 1850-51,, tenement buildings were erected by James Aiken around School Street SW between Third Avenue SW and Fourth Avenue SW (now Park Avenue NW). This building still stands today as part of the Historical Society of Tenafly Incorporated building complex next door which includes several other former tenant buildings including three churches (St Andrew's Episcopal Church; Methodist Episcopal Church; Presbyterian Church) dating back to 1795-1800 ; Stonington Baptist Chapel (1814); First Congregationalist Church (1836); Congregationalist church destroyed by fire (1881) ; Second Congregationalist church built 1895). By 1870 only about eighty people lived in Tenafley Township - twenty five percent of its total population (.pdf file attached). Most residents either worked outside the township or farmed their own land within it . TenafLY Female Temperance League founded 1915 When World War I started many men left their jobs for military service although many women stayed home with children or took care of elderly relatives while husbands went off to fight abroad. On September 3rd 1915 tenacious women got together to form "The Ladies Temperance League" (). The league sponsored dances every evening during Prohibition days (), provided aid money both through contributions made online ($10/month), cash donations ($10 per week), or personal loans ($100 per week) offered up by local ladies (), distributed literature promoting temperance principles (), raised funds for relief organizations such as American Red Cross () and Salvation Army (), organized fund drives throughout town (), participated actively comforted war widows () when they returned home(), held bake sales () throughout town ().
