Small batch coffee history in Summit, New Jersey began with two people brewing coffee from a small roaster on Main Street. The first time was in 1984 when the founders of Summit Coffee Company, Don and Kathy Myers, bought a small roaster. They started making all-natural roasted beans for their customers. In 1992, the company moved to its current location at 321 Main Street in downtown Summit. In 2005, the company became an independent business and changed its name to Summit Coffee Company LLC. In 2007, the company opened a new store on Roosevelt Boulevard in Paramus and began serving breakfast and lunchtime sandwiches as well as espresso drinks and pastries. In fall 2012, Summit Coffee Company LLC donated twenty pounds of organic Sumatra Java beans to help support local farmers markets in Weehawken and Hackensack counties while they continue to roast their own beans. Since opening its doors in 1984, Summit Coffee Company has been an important part of the town of Summit's coffee culture. By donating their beans to local farmers markets during 2012-2016, they have support systems that keep these markets running year-round while helping provide jobs forlocal workers who produce food for local consumers.

Summit is a borough in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 14,463. Summit was formed on March 17, 1874 from portions of Easton Township. The name "Summit" comes from the phrase "the highest point in town". The first settlers to Summit were Captain John Fenton and his family who moved from Endicott in Connecticut in 1795. They built a cabin on nearby Mount Carmel and named their farm after Mount Carmel which they saw as the "highest point in town." In 1800, Captain John Fenton's son George bought another piece of land east of Summit and started building what would become known as Mount Carmel Manor. By 1822, he had additional property added to his holdings including that now comprising the Borough of Summit. In 1874, during the township's first meeting held on March 17th under new organizational rules instituted following creation of Burlington County by an act passed by the New Jersey General Assembly on November 3rd, Summit was annexed by Easton Township; however it remains one of only two municipalities within Burlington County that still maintain its own government despite being entirely within another municipality’s borders (the other is Clifton Heights). On July 1st 1916 – just three years after Lisbon Beach became part of Camden - Summit voted to annex into Camden with almost unanimous support. This event marked the beginning of an era when most small communities within Burlington County merged or amalgamated with larger municipalities over time; however some such as West Caldwell (referenced below), managed to retain their own independent governments until completely merging into larger districts or townships at various points throughout their history. Over time though there have been occasional local efforts to secede from Shoreacres Township and form their own municipality separate from Burlington County altogether; however these have generally failed due to strong majorities among all community members seeking annexation into either Shoreacres or Camden anyways at each step along the way. Despite this lack thereof any attempts have been made thus far toward forming a full-fledged municipal government for Summit located inside Ofsted Township boundaries which would be subject to same zoning regulations and governance structures as both Shoreacres Township and Camden City proper; however given current trends this may be increasingly unlikely if not impossible without congressional action favorable towards such a move given that both townships are home to large commercial areas and much political power respectively associated with those areas respectively. Summit was a small town in New Jersey, located north of Newark. The community was first settled by English colonists in the late 1700s. It became a borough in 1907 and a city in 1912. In 1974, Summit became part of the new metropolitan area of Newark–Jersey City.
The first white people to visit the area were two Dutch farmers, Hendrick Houck and Abraham Vennemans, in 1614. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland until 1776. In 1824, a group of Englishmen led by George Washington explored the area and named it Summit after reaching a high point on the Appalachian Mountains. In 1829, David Livingstone entered the area and named it for his mentor, General Sir John Franklin. On February 4, 1847, James Kline purchased 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) of land east of present-day Summit Township from Andrew Bogue for $5 per acre (1 €=0.50). On July 3, 1850, Kline donated 1/2 acre (0.30 hectare) to Princeton University as an endowment for its newinfrastructure program called "Kline Institute". On November 5, 1888, Summit Township was organized from portions of Middlesex County and Union County with a population of 751 residents. It became one of 20 townships in Jersey County when that county was created on October 14th., 1889.
