The municipality of Summit, New Jersey was organized on February 15th, 1874. The village of Summit was established on that date as well. On July 1st, 1907, the towns of Bloomfield and Summit were consolidated into one municipality. In 1915, the United States Census counted a population of 382 in Summit. In 1930, the population had increased to 468. The town's population peaked at 692 in 1970 before declining steadily through the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000, the town had a total population of 568; it is now below 500 residents per square mile (190/km²). Today, much of what once made up Summit has been lost to development and redevelopment within walking distance of most homes. However, there are still many remnants from past communities which include schools and businesses from when those areas were larger than present-day boundaries. Summit first became aware that they would be hosting a international exposition during an event called "The Great Newark Fair" in 1876 where representatives from Berlin hosted a fair for German immigrants who had come to America since 1790 with hopes of finding work opportunities. This event served as an impetus for new investments by local entrepreneurs in goods and services needed for the exposition and help make possible Stewart's successful attempt to become mayor following Newark's incorporation as a municipal borough on November 3rd that year. On October 20th 1870 Samuel Haddon Stewart - son of James Stewart - won election as Mayoralty candidate after running unopposed against incumbent John Witherspoon because no other candidates could gather enough signatures to qualify for election under state law at that time; this was only the second mayoral race in New Jersey after having been set off by Borough Corporation elections two years earlier on April 7th which yielded victory for James Ewing over challenger Samuel Fenton despite objections from several civic organizations including the American Institute of Architects who believed their member Haddon should have received election due to his father's prior political experience within Newark government service candidacy itself rather than via nomination process).
