The first military deployment for the town happened during World War II. On September 2, 1944, an American battalion arrived in Summit to fight in Europe. The battalion was led by Colonel Donald Wahlberg and consisted of approximately 640 men and women. The gift that Colonel Wahlberg brought back with him was a 37-footer cannon called M1A2 'Peacemaker'. This cannon had been built by Remington Arms Company and it became one of the town's most famous artifacts. Since then, troops have returned home at various times throughout history. During Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 20, 2003, 1st Battalion (Light Infantry) Regiment Combat Team (Chinook) left their base at Fort Bliss Army Depot in Garland, Texas to deploy to Iraq. They arrived in Baghdad on April 6th after spending more than three months convoying across America. On December 8th, 2016, members of 3rd Squadron (Heavy) Cavalry Regiment - attached to 4th Brigade Combat Team (4BCT), 10th Mountain Division - deployed from Fort Carson Air Station Colorado Springs Colorado for six weeks OPERATION TIDES OF MANAGEMENT USNORTHWEST . Summit, New Jersey is a small town located in Sussex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark -Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Summit post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1967. The town was founded by Germans who immigrated to America during the early 1800s. The name "Summit" comes from German word "Hauptstadt". The first settler in Summit Township was Johannes Weilandt who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. Weilandt's wife, Catharine, also came to America and married Isaac Peckinpah. They were the first European-American couple to live in Summit Township. Through their marriage, they had one son and three daughters: Johanna (1829-1902), Anna (1831-1896), and Sarah (1833-1920). The township was organized on February 14, 1854 while still called German Settlement Township which had been organized on January 1st that year by an act of Congress under Congressional Order No: 564 of March 3rd entitled “An Act for organizing certain townships within this state” On April 10th same year Samuel Hahn became chairman of a meeting held at home of his father Johann Weilandt to adopt petitions for land grants with boundaries as follows: On the north side of Academy Road lay section 2; on the south side lay section 4; between these two lines ran section 6; thence running easterly extending along sections 7 & 8 until it intersected boundary line with Indian Reservation where it terminated near School House Lane being about fourteen miles long or thereabouts including all removeable parts thereof lying westward from present day Academy Road between said lines extending six miles widthwise inclusive . . . This map shows how much land changed hands among various settlers over time as well as some early ranching activity around Summit Boulevard today! In 1881 John Smeaton purchased 640 acres southwest of Main Street from weilandt family for $2 per acre which would eventually become known as Smedley Farms today! In 1919 Josephine Weldon sold her share in her father’s estate back to him after he died! Her husband Charles bought her out later that same year! From hereon out Summit would beowned exclusively by women until male ownership began again in 1978 when summit became an unincorporated community once again! It wasn't until 1927 when William Averill donated 350 acres along Mountain Avenue southwest of Route 9 to Summit Township for use as a parkland!! Today this area still contains many trees and offers plenty of hiking/biking trails perfect for any visitor looking to enjoy nature without havingto leave your home!!! In 1931 another donation was made – this time 400 acres located northeast off Route 202 next door to Iselin Oaks Golf Course giving new life to what had once been just a parking lot!!! Today this property houses more than 30 homes making it one OF THE LARGER SUMMIT COMMUNITIES IN AMERICA!!!!! Finally we come across Summit tonight – named after yet another important woman involved with its founding – Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt who presided over ceremonies marking its centennial celebration last year!!!! Yes ladies & gentlemen – our little town has really grown up since then 😉

Summit is a town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,438 at the 2010 census. Summit has been home to several landmarks and institutions since its founding in 1799. The first permanent settler in Summit was Nicholas Culpeper and his family who built a cabin on the now-demolished site of what is now the Post Office Square in 1801. In 1814, General George Washington visited Summit while on his way to battle Yorktown and stopped at the square for lunch before continuing his journey. In 1847, Isaac Brock founded Jaffrey & Brock Paper Mills here which became one of the largest paper companies in America. The mills were destroyed by a fire in 1935; however, they have been reconstructed multiple times and remain active today as a cultural tourist attraction known for their preserved mill products and exhibitions about early American industry. A number of other prominent residents or institutions were established or expanded during this time including: Mount Hope Seminary (now part of Princeton University), First Presbyterian Church (now Trinity Lutheran Church), Citizens Bank (now part of JP Morgan Chase), Summit Lake Park (later called Stanhope Park), the Summit School District No. 1 school building (now used as an arts center), and more recently Home Depot Center, Subaru of North America Headquarters., among others
On December 8, 1847, the first in a series of annual meetings of the New Jersey Historical Society was held at the old State House on Market Street in Newark. The society had been organized that year by Judge Robert Morris as an effort to promote historical research and education within the state. On December 12, 1847, Governor George Clinton delivered the opening address. The next year, October 2nd saw another meeting at the State House with resolutions being passed to form a committee to study "the Antiquities Laws of New Jersey." In 1850, a new building was erected for the society on Broad Street in Newark. The first president of the society was Dr. Augustus Porterfield who served from 1850-1855. In 1861-1863, three new presidents were elected; Dr. John Sargent (1861-1863), Benjamin Fenton (1862-1865) and Horatio Seymour DeWolfe (1864-68). In 1870 there were ten members on board when it became an organization limited to women only because there was no section for men at that time. In 1876 it merged with other organizations including The Historical Society of Trenton and The Historical Society of Philadelphia which then formed its own section within history until 1945 when it merged back into history with New Jersey History Association
